On General Hospital, Drew Cain has been spiraling from one bad decision after another. He’s currently contemplating lying and stating that Michael (Rory Gibson) shot him — getting dangerously close to crossing lines that once seemed unthinkable for him. And while Drew’s moral compass has gone off the rails, Cameron Mathison is having the time of his life playing it. On the Daytime Emmy red carpet, the actor opened up about the storyline and how much fun it’s been to lean into Drew’s darker side.
Some great fun

General Hospital’s Cameron Mathison spoke with Parade about his current arc and didn’t try to hide his excitement. He said he’s “just super grateful” to be given a storyline with this kind of complexity and edge. That edge, of course, comes with plenty of questions. “I don’t even know who shot me,” he revealed with a laugh. Drew may not remember much, but Mathison clearly knows he’s in the middle of something juicy.
The actor admitted that with thirty years in daytime television under his belt, he can recognize when a character is headed down a dark path. And he’s not running from that turn — he’s fully embracing it. “It was fun and I’m willing to dive in,” he added.
Mathison further explained that Drew’s journey from when he first joined General Hospital has become increasingly satisfying to play. He was originally only supposed to be on for a short time, but that clearly increased. His meaty, ongoing storyline has helped him to flex different acting muscles, which he loves to do. (Why does nobody ever record what Drew says?)
A harder edge — and loving it

The General Hospital star has become a core part of Port Charles’ ever-twisting canvas. “Frank [Valentini] has gone way above and beyond,” he said, acknowledging how much trust the show has placed in him and this evolving character arc.
That trust has given Mathison the freedom to explore Drew as someone not so easily labeled as being one of the good guys. “I really actually love what I get to do with this character, because he’s hard to like and I love it,” he admitted. He’s obviously been leaning into the challenge as Drew’s antics continue to enrage the viewers.
And while the mystery of who shot Drew continues to unfold, Drew has grown bolder in his decisions (like throwing his weight around because he’s a congressman), and fans are witnessing an even newer version emerging. Mathison seems just as excited as the viewers are to see where that road leads. And from the sound of it, he’s more than ready to keep going even darker. (Find out why Drew can’t actually be Shiloh.)
General Hospital can be seen weekdays on ABC and Hulu.
