General Hospital star Chris McKenna has been having a blast playing WSB station chief Jack Brennan. The actor brought the spy game to life when he posted pics on social media of Brennan’s office, as well as some fun images of himself, Eden McCoy (Josslyn), and Bryce Durfee (Vaughn), lampooning their spy gig, posing with fingers shaped as guns. He’s also shared with fans a peek into his personal life, cementing his connection with the viewers. He recently opened up about what’s going on with Jack, especially since he’s now on contract at the show.

No More Mr. Two-Dimensional

General Hospital’s Chris McKenna had a chance to speak with Woman’s World magazine, explaining the fun he’s having playing Jack, stating, “We’re starting to see different sides of him and starting to see cracks in his armor. He’s a guy who can’t let his heart get in the way, and he’s fallen in love against his will - perhaps at risk to his career and his health.” That love he’s talking about is Jack’s romance with Carly (Laura Wright).

Over the years, McKenna has played many law enforcement characters, including Agent Simmons on S.W.A.T. and Detective Hopkins in the 2020 film Killer in Suburbia. But he described playing Jack as a change of pace for himself. He remarked, “It’s no longer a two-dimensional character or a sexy leading man. This is a complex human I get to play—and I get to plumb all the depths, now that I’m going to be sticking around.”

A role with layers…and secrets

At a recent General Hospital Fan Club event, McKenna announced his contract update, which gives him more time to develop Jack. He noted, “It’s my first chance since I was a preteen to spend time with a role. At this age, with much more experience under my belt, I’m excited to create a character I can be proud of and love - and hopefully people come to love, even if you love to hate him!”

“If I’m doing it right, you should not know where he’s coming from,” the General Hospital star stated, adding, “what he’s thinking or what his plans are, because you can’t become the head of the WSB if everyone sees you coming.” He explained that due to the nature of Jack’s job, he can’t just walk around Port Charles being a happy guy. “He’s got to have a lot of cards up his sleeve, so with every [other] character, he’s a different person.” He then beamed, “I have the best role in daytime, because he’s so many different characters!”

He further speculated that Jack’s endgame might mean that he’ll have to one day eliminate Sonny (Maurice Benard). He’s also recruited Carly’s daughter, Josslyn (Eden McCoy), as an intelligence agent, and when the truth comes out, it could destroy his relationship. He stated that Carly “is the only respite he gets, so he’s becoming more and more dependent on her - which is gonna suck when things come to a head!”

General Hospital can be seen weekdays on ABC and Hulu.
