Florence + the Machine 'Everybody Scream': Every song ranked from best to worst

1. One of the Greats

This track was created with Bowen and Dessner's touch. Florence sings about criticisms, industry dynamics, and more. One of the Greats features Guitars' buzz with post-punk vibes. Vocals are also powerful. Notable lyrics include:

"I crawled up from under the earth/ Broken nails and coughing dirt/ Spitting out my songs so you could sing along, oh/ And with each bedraggled breath, I knew I came back from the dead"

2. You Can Have It All

Here, Florence sings about devotion and grief in practical terms. The arrangement of the song mainly leans on strings and pulse. Lyrics depict acceptance without surrender, which somehow makes it an anchor as the album nears the end. Some of its lines are:

"Dug a hole in the garden and buried a scream/ And from it grew a bright red tree/ Shining with jagged leavеs"

3. Everybody Scream

The opener of Florence + the Machine's latest album sets the tone of the record with its organ and choir menace, rhythm, and a scream. The track is theatrical and talks about control, fatigue, and more. The horror-theme intro of Everybody Scream is notable. Florence sings:

"Get on the stage (Dance)/ And I call her (Sing) by her first name (Turn)/ Try to stay away (Move)/ But I always meet (Shake) her back at this place (Scream)"

4. Drink Deep

This one comes with a slow-burning folk-horror vibe and significant metaphors. Sparse textures of Drink Deep allow the listeners to feel the weight of the lyrics until the crescendo. This song is arguably one of the clearest articulations of the record's main theme. Florence + the Machine sings:

"My eyes began to hollow/ My skin began to fade/ What I thought was a night was a thousand years/ What I thought was a sip was a thousand tears"

5. Music by Men

Music by Men has an acoustic framing, which feels more intimate than other songs on Florence + the Machine's latest album. Lyrics talk about work, therapy, partners, and more. The plea to "put out a record and have it not ruin my life" is memorable. The song has some relatively conversational verses. Lyrics include:

"'Cause I know how to fall in love, I do it constantly/ I fall in love with everyone I meet for ten minutes at least/ Then comes the work, the resentments, and the hurt"

6. Kraken

The song leans into mythic imagery with a catchy rhythm. It comes with harmonies, percussion, and metaphors. The drum pattern and Florence's vocals are some of this track's strengths. Some of its lines are:

"I put my fist into my mouth and scream/ Some things it seems are catching up with me/ And as it rises to my chin, I should really stop watching"

7. Sympathy Magic

Sympathy Magic begins in vulnerability and ends in exclamations. It seemingly recalls Lungs-era percussion with a synth break. The shifts feel deliberate and not chaotic. Florence + the Machine sings:

"And light coming in the window just so/ And the wind through my fingers/ The only God that I know/ And it does not want me on my knees to believe"

8. Witch Dance

This is the record's one of the most effective invocations of its mystical theme. The song feels like a kinetic mood-piece. However, it does not feature any significant revelations or metaphors. The floor-tom pattern under the harp sounds nice. Notable lyrics include:

"Open my legs, lie down with death/ We kiss, we sigh, we sweat/ His blackberry mouth stains my nightgown/ I pull him close"

9. Perfume and Milk

One of the album's most austere cuts is Perfume and Milk. The lyrics talk about struggles between reading on a phone and eventual distractions. The melody is notable. The track's strength is its economy, which gives the record places to breathe and think. Florence + the Machine sings:

"Doing the work and sleeping alone/ Downloading "Revelations of Divine Love" on my phone/ Trying to read, but getting distracted"

10. Buckle

A relatively unadorned track of Everybody Scream. The lyrics read like a relationship pep-talk. Its strength is in pacing. "Buckle" keeps the emotional line of Florence + the Machine's latest record taut. The clipped drum elements of the tracks are notable. Some of its lines are as follows:

'Cause I'm stupid and I'm damaged, and you're a disaster/ When you walk into the room, oh, none of it matters/ Oh, baby, I just buckle my resolution in tatters

11. The Old Religion

The Old Religion connects the record's witchcraft or folk-horror theme to old beliefs. The arrangement sits in a mid-tempo churn. The lyric threads clear images. However, the track feels less essential than the other top track of Everybody Scream. Florence + the Machine sings:

"A lightning strike, a fallen tree/ I'm not afraid, oh, don't let it find me/ But you can't outrun yourself, you'll see/ And I'm powerless, oh, don't remind me"

12. And Love

It is the closer of Florence + the Machine's Everybody Scream. The track is relatively tidy and softly sung. The lyrics seemingly give resolutions to statements of the other songs on this album. As the album closes, And Love fades into strings. Notable lines include:

"And love was not what I thought it was/ It crept up on me despite myself/ And it was not a love song, it was something else"
