In 2011, Selena Gomez announced that her mother, Mandy, was expecting another child. However, Mandy experienced a miscarriage. Since then, the family has honored the child, named Scarlett, according to People Magazine.
All about Selena Gomez’s family
Ricardo "Rick" Joel Gómez, the son of Mexican immigrants to the U.S., became involved with Mandy Teefey while they were both in high school in Grand Prairie, Texas. According to People Magazine, Mandy gave birth to Selena Gomez when she was 16 years old. Both Gomez and Mandy have been open about their early lives. During a conversation with Entertainment Tonight in 2017, Mandy recalled the challenges she faced as a ‘teen mom.’ At the time, Mandy said,
“I was a teen mom with Selena, obviously, and was very judged by that, even by my counselors and my teachers [who said] that I failed and just let go of it. My neighborhood was a really rough neighborhood [with] gangs.”
Sharing that becoming pregnant with Gomez shifted her perspective, Mandy said,
“With all of that stuff, and when I got pregnant, I think that's what triggered, because I was like, 'OK, I have another person depending on me. I gotta get straight,' and that's when I started hammering through. I'm like, 'I'm not going to let her have the upbringing I did.' I kind of kept powering through -- you get used to it.”

Gomez has also referred to the sacrifices her mother made to support her. According to Glamour, the pop star, during an event in 2013, said,
"My mom had me when she was 16, and I’m from Grand Prairie, Texas. And she worked four jobs and completely dedicated her life into making mine better. So, to me, she’s the definition of a strong woman, and I love her so much.”
According to People Magazine, Mandy Teefey and her husband, Brian Teefey, managed Selena Gomez’s career until 2014. Gomez collaborated with her mother to produce the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why. The mother-daughter duo also co-founded the mental health organization Wondermind.
During a conversation with Rolling Stone, Gomez, who rose to fame as a child actor on Barney, shared that her father Rick was not comfortable juggling the entertainment industry. She said,
“he didn’t want to be a part of this industry life, so it was really me and my mom, our journey.”
Even so, Rick Gomez regularly shares tributes to his eldest daughter on social media, along with glimpses of his other children.
