Doja Cat is teasing her most adventurous era yet. The Grammy-winning artist is gearing up to release her next album, Vie, and says the process has pushed her into brand-new creative territory, both musically and personally.
In a recent conversation with Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe, the 28-year-old confirmed she’s collaborating with Jack Antonoff for the first time, calling the partnership both fresh and unexpectedly natural. She shared:
“I’m working with Jack Antonoff and working with a person that’s new in my life. And so it’s the grappling with talking about something personal and creating something fresh, and then getting to know someone new, and then all of these things fell together really naturally.”
Jack Antonoff, best known for his work with Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter, has been a steady presence during the project. Doja Cat says the sessions gave her space to experiment.
“He’s just been such a wonderful person to work with. But yeah, I think it’s just been nice to play. I really played through the whole thing … I think what I wanted to do was play with my voice in ways that are a little bit less unconventional. And so I’m shrieking a little bit on this album, and that’s been a lot of fun.”
She has publicly said in Apple Music and V Magazine interviews that it’s pop-leaning and that she explored naivety and past relationships as lyrical themes.
Doja Cat unpacks past relationships and "love-bombing" in new album Vie
Alongside the sonic exploration, Doja Cat revealed that Vie reflects on her own growth. She credits therapy and reflection on past relationships for inspiring her to write about themes she hasn’t touched before, including the complexities of “love-bombing.”
“There’s other things outside of myself that were inspiring me to write about these things. I had been in relationships that made me think about things in a different way, and I think naivety is a big part of this album too. I speak about rushing and love-bombing in a way.”
She elaborated further on the topic:
“I think sometimes people don’t know that they’re doing it or they do, but giving excessive compliments and gifts right off the bat, that sort of thing. I thought that was a really fun thing to write about.”
Doja Cat has previously revealed that Vie will be pop-leaning. In her exclusive interview with V Magazine, the “Say So” hitmaker shared:
“I do want to be self-aware enough to admit the fact that this is a pop-driven project. I know that I can make pop music, and pop is just that it’s popular."
She further stated:
"It starts to become a bit of a thing that’s viewed as a sport by people who are just bystanders to it, who enjoy it, but maybe also don’t respect it or what it is, which is just music … They see it as if this is some kind of football for girls and gays.”
Followng 2023's Scarlet, Vie is set for release on Sept. 26.
