American rock singer and lead vocalist of REO Speedwagon, Terry Luttrel, was in a car crash on June 15, 2025, after falling asleep at the wheel.
After a long night of signing autographs and little to no sleep, the 78-year-old singer was on his way to St. Louis when the accident happened. Luttrel reported that he signed autographs till 2 AM and went to sleep at 4:30 AM. He got up a few hours later to drive to St. Louis for some personal business.
Terry Luttrel told The News-Gazette:
"I was able to get up and get out of the car. The airbag went off and cracked my sternum a little bit."
"I have a little back pain and neck pain. It’s nothing that can’t be overcome," he added.
The REO Speedwagon singer is recovering at the Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois.

On his drive to St. Louis, the lead singer was followed by his bandmate, who witnessed the accident. Terry Luttrel is the only casualty from the car accident. There are no reports of other cars or people injured.
According to Terry, the car was "totaled," and he narrated the events before and after the crash. He said:
"It just happened... I nodded off. I rolled the car over, and I woke up, and I was in a cocoon (the airbags)."
Luttrel spoke to REO Speedwagon's drummer, Michael Mesey, and said that he feels "blessed" to be able to walk away with minor injuries.
Mesey had more updates regarding his bandmate. He spoke to the Daily Mail and revealed that the lead singer will be back with the band after doing all that is required to whip him back into shape. He elaborated:
"I spoke to Terry this morning and he is going to be doing physical therapy for a couple weeks and is looking forward to getting back to performing all the REO Classics... He is very blessed to have walked away from this accident, mainly a blessing from God and the airbags in his BMW."
He also added that Terry Luttrel is doing well despite the accident. In his words:
"Terry is in great spirits and thankful for all of the love and prayers from everyone around the country."
Terry Luttrel is currently recovering after a bad crash on Sunday, June 15. He is at the Carle Foundation Hospital in Illinois. Luttrel has a few minor injuries, like a cracked sternum, but is in good spirits, as reported by his bandmate, Michael Mesey.
