Destiny’s Child has been on the lips of numerous music enthusiasts as Beyonce reunited with Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams for a thrilling performance at the final night of her record-breaking Cowboy Carter Tour at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium.
The American girl group whose final lineup consisted of the aforementioned singers was formed in 1990 in Houston, Texas. It was formerly a quartet group called Girl's Tyme. It was officially given the name Destiny’s Child in 1997 after the members were signed to Columbia Records.
The group focused on the pop, R&B, and hip hop genres and was active from 1997 to 2006, when they officially disbanded. The group stated that its sudden split was due to each member wanting to focus on individual projects.
Since its disbandment, members of the group have reunited three times: first at the 2013 Super Bowl halftime show, then during Beyoncé's 2018 Coachella performance, and most recently at the final show of Queen Bey's Cowboy Carter Tour.
History of Destiny’s Child explored
Destiny’s Child’s big break happened after the group released the hit song No, No, No and the successful album The Writing's on the Wall.
In an interview with The Guardian in 2006, Beyonce spoke about the success of the group.
“We had no idea of what its impact would be. We had no idea that The Writing's on the Wall would be as big a record as it was. Especially worldwide … at that time that we'd talk to people at the record company and they'd say, 'Look, they don't even play R&B in Europe right now.'”
Before its split, the group dropped more successful singles and albums, including Bills, Bills, Bills, Say My Name, Bug a Boo, Jumpin' Jumpin', Independent Women, Survivor and Bootylicious. Destiny’s Child also won several awards, including bagging three Grammy Awards from fourteen nominations, five AMAs, two BET Awards, two MTV VMAs, one Brit Award, and a Guinness World Record.
Kelly Rowland announced the group’s disbandment onstage during their 2005 Barcelona concert.
“We have been working together as Destiny’s Child since we were 9, and touring together since we were 14. After a lot of discussion and some deep soul searching, we realized that our current tour has given us the opportunity to leave Destiny’s Child on a high note, united in our friendship and filled with an overwhelming gratitude for our music, our fans, and each other,” the official statement released by the group read.
It continued:
“No matter what happens, we will always love each other as friends and sisters and will always support each other as artists. We want to thank all of our fans for their incredible love and support, and hope to see you all again as we continue fulfilling our destinies.”
