David Byrne is officially back with a new album, a lead single, and a world tour.
David Byrne is all set to release Who Is the Sky? on September 5, 2025. It will be his first solo studio album in seven years.
The album features 12 new tracks. It will arrive via Matador Records and is produced by Grammy-winner Kid Harpoon. Ghost Train Orchestra will join Byrne on the album. The album also features guest appearances from Hayley Williams (Paramore), St. Vincent, Tom Skinner (The Smile, Sons of Kemet), and Mauro Refosco, a percussionist from the American Utopia band.
On Instagram, David Byrne wrote:
"I finished up a new album recently called "Who Is The Sky?". It is produced by Kid Harpoon, joined by Ghost Train Orchestra and, on a couple of songs, my friends St. Vincent and Hayley Williams. It comes out Sept. 5th under Matador—a new label for me."
David Byrne also added:
"I will start rehearsing soon for a tour that begins in September. The tour concept is unlike anything I've done before. We'll keep the mobility that was a key element of the American Utopia tour and Broadway show— but instead of the chain… we will have locations. You'll just have to come and experience what that involves. Tour tickets go on sale 6/13."
David Byrne concluded, saying:
"Hope everyone is enjoying the first single (and video, directed by Gabriel Barcia-Columbo - @gabebc ) "Everybody Laughs", which is out now!"
Complete tracklist of David Byrne's 'Who Is the Sky?'
After American Utopia, David Byrne started writing songs that would become Who Is the Sky?. In a press statement, he shared:
"I did a LOT of cooking (Mexican and Indian mostly) and a LOT of drawing. I have found that when the time comes, it's easier to start if there is a little stockpile – and before too long, there was. Very rudimentary songs began to emerge, with just me on acoustic guitar singing over a programmed loop or beat."
As the songs developed, David Byrne brought in Kid Harpoon to help shape the project. The Ghost Train Orchestra handled arrangements. The album's full tracklist is as follows:
- Everybody Laughs
- When We Are Singing
- My Apartment Is My Friend
- A Door Called No
- What Is the Reason for It?
- I Met the Buddha at a Downtown Party
- Don't Be Like That
- The Avant Garde
- Moisturizing Thing
- I'm an Outsider
- She Explains Things to Me
- The Truth
