On her new album, The Life of a Showgirl, Taylor Swift has included a track titled “Father Figure”, which interpolates or reimagines George Michael’s classic 1987 song of the same name.

Kenny Goss, George Michael’s former partner, told TMZ in a statement that George would’ve totally approved of Taylor’s tribute. George Michael was a singer-songwriter, record producer, and a Grammy Award winner. He was best known for his albums, including Ladies & Gentlemen: The Best of George Michael, Older, Patience, and Songs from the Last Century. He died in December 2016.

What did Kenny Goss say about Taylor Swift's 'Father Figure' tribute?

Kenny Goss, who was George's partner for 13 years, said that George would be proud of the ''Father Figure'' tribute Taylor is paying to him through one of her tracks from her upcoming album.

He also said that although Michael never actually met Swift, he’s confident George would have liked her and appreciated that a major artist like her was interested in his music. He also added that the rework on ''Father Figure'' was a complete surprise to him, as he was unaware. He also mentioned that he enjoys Swift's music and is pleased that she’s paying tribute to one of George’s most iconic hits.

Swift officially announced her upcoming album, The Life of a Showgirl, during an appearance on the New Heights podcast hosted by her boyfriend, Travis, and his brother Jason Kelce on August 13, 2025. According to People, the countdown on her website, set to 12:12 a.m. ET on August 12, had already built anticipation for the reveal. The next day, Taylor revealed all the details of the upcoming album, including the album title, cover art, tracklist, and the release date.

Following the announcement of the upcoming album, Taylor posted visuals of her dazzling wardrobe, which leans into vintage Vegas glam, as it includes outfits with crystals, beads, corseted bodysuits, glittering gowns, feathers, and shimmery satins. All her looks were styled by Joseph Cassell Falconer, her longtime wardrobe stylist.

The Life of a Showgirl would be Taylor's twelfth studio album. Her eleventh studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, was released in 2024 and became a global best-seller that year. The upcoming album consists of twelve tracks, and the title track features Sabrina Carpenter.

Some of the tracks from the album include The Fate of Ophelia, Eldest Daughter, Ruin the Friendship, Cancelled!, Wood, Honey, Actually Romantic, Elizabeth Taylor, and Actually Romantic, among others.

The album is scheduled to be released on October 3, 2025.
