With the growing tensions over anti-ICE demonstrations across the nation, Ariana Grande has also expressed her stand regarding the issue. In a remark which might be perceived as a jab at the President and his immigration policy, Grande posted a story on Instagram where a man held a placard that bore the following words:
"Could someone explain which crimes get you deported and which ones get you elected president? It's so confusing."
Grande’s post comes at a time when ICE operations have drastically picked up in the major cities, with President Trump instructing more deportations, especially in places such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York. These policies have come under the scanner a lot recently, with protests erupting nationwide in response to the tactics. Several celebrities have spoken previously on the matter as well, including Jenna Ortega, who spoke against the policies as recently as last week.
Mark Ruffalo, Eva Longoria, and Kim Kardashian, among others, are some of her fellow entertainers in relation to the music industry who have given their opinion on the matter and have joined the list of celebrities raising their voice against ICE.
Ariana Grande's history of activism
This is also not the first instance when Ariana has used her voice to speak on political issues, and has previously used her voice to support the rights of the LGBTQ+ community in addition to her immigration activism. When President Trump passed the executive order in January to axe the word 'gender' from the federal documents, Ariana Grande was among the first few to voice out her concerns regarding the move.
Earlier, she had also mentioned how she loves the LGBTQ community in a letter published on Billboard in 2018. While highlighting her commitment to the community's cause, she opened up about the reason why activism comes naturally to her.
"There is nothing more infectious than the joy and love that the LGBTQ community exudes. I grew up with a gay brother whose every move I would emulate. I idolised him. Everything Frankie did, I would do. I can't remember the difference between Frankie before he came out and Frankie after he came out. He's always just been Frankie. Sexuality and gender were never topics my family and I were afraid to discuss."
The timing of Ariana Grande's Instagram post also comes at a time when the anti-ICE protests are on the rise in big cities, giving additional weight to her message. Social media has not been left out either, and her message has been taken up by users who have reposted the picture of her post on Instagram on other social media platforms, thus giving her message much more coverage.
The movement of celebrities against ICE has helped bring more attention to immigration enforcement issues. While Ariana Grande's statements have certainly highlighted the issues gripping the country today, it remains to be seen if they will bring about a change in policies.
