Albanian PM Edi Rama introduced an AI-generated minister named Diella in his cabinet last month. Prime Minister Rama has now announced that the AI-generated minister is "pregnant" with 83 children. While speaking at the recent Berlin Global Dialogue, the Albanian PM said that these children will assist 83 Members of Parliament belonging to his party.
"Diella is pregnant and expecting 83 children, one for each member of our parliament, who will serve as assistants to them, who will participate in parliamentary sessions and take notes on everything that happens and who will inform and suggest to the members of parliament regarding their reactions. These children will have their mother's knowledge regarding EU legislation," said Rama.
As the Albanian PM's announcement surfaced on the internet, a flurry of reactions came online. Pop Base shared the news on its X page on Sunday, and many netizens seemed puzzled by it. An X user wrote,
"I’m the first in my bloodline to read this sentence"
Internet reacts to the Albanian PM announcing the "pregnancy" of his AI-generated minister
Reacting to the announcement, an X user commented that we are now living in the "Matrix."
"We are OFFICIALLY living in the Matrix wtf did I just read."
Another user called the news a "dystopian headline" from a "Netflix show," while warning about the possible repercussions of AI advancement in the future.
"This is the kind of dystopian headline you’d expect from a Netflix show, not real life. Governments out here role-playing parenthood with AI like it’s cute, when it’s actually the start of something we probably won’t be able to control once it grows up."
Another netizen wondered at AI pregnancy and questioned the announcement by the Albanian PM.
"I'm sorry and I'm supposed to believe our world leaders are more professional and sane than the average person??? What the F*CK IS AN AI PREGNANCY."
Taking a shot at the Albanian PM, an internet user quipped by writing
"Boomers always trash AI with idiotic ideas"
Another X user raised concerns about the AI integration in every space and commented,
"AI ministers, AI pregnancy, AI 83 kids…. the kids in hs can no longer write paragraphs without AI. yall can’t have basic human interactions without it. we are beyond cooked at this point."
However, a few netizens supported the move. An online user called the Albanian PM's move a "clever way" to introduce massive software deployment in governance.
"This whole "birth" metaphor is just a clever way to roll out a massive software deployment. They are probably hoping these AI "kids" can finally get some paperwork filed correctly, which would be a miracle in any bureaucracy."
In September, PM Edi Rama "appointed" AI-powered chatbot Diella as the Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence. He took this move with the intention of making public tenders "100% free of corruption." Talking to the BBC, the Albanian PM said
"We're working with a brilliant team, which is not only Albanian but also international, to come out with the first full AI model in public procurement... Not only will we wipe out every potential influence on public biddings – we will also make the process much faster, much more efficient, and totally accountable."
Diella was initially launched as a virtual assistant on the e-Albania platform with the intention of helping citizens in filing documents.
