Grandmaster and chess influencer Daniel Naroditsky dies at 29

American chess grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky is dead. His family announced his passing in a statement shared by The Charlotte Chess Center, an institute Daniel was associated with before his passing.

“It is with great sadness that we share the unexpected passing of Daniel Naroditsky.”

It continued:

“Daniel was a talented chess player, commentator, and educator, and a cherished member of the chess community, admired and respected by fans and players around the world. He was also a loving son and brother, and a loyal friend to many.”

In the statement, Daniel’s family requests privacy.

“We ask for privacy for Daniel's family during this extremely difficult time.”

It concluded:

“Let us remember Daniel for his passion and love for the game of chess, and for the joy and inspiration he brought to us all every day.”

Naroditsky was 29 when he passed. The cause of his death was not revealed.


Who was Daniel Naroditsky?

Daniel Naroditsky, even though he was not yet thirty before his passing, was many things, including a chess grandmaster, an author, a teacher, a commentator, and a YouTuber. He was a chess prodigy, winning the Under 12 World Youth Chess Championship section in 2007. In 2013, he was crowned the winner of the US Junior Championship and was awarded the title of grandmaster that same year. He was 18.

Following the announcement of his passing, celebrated individuals in the chess community have paid their tribute.

The Chief Chess Officer of Chess.com, Danny Rensch, said:

“Danya was more than an amazing, inspirational face of our game; he was a friend and brother.”

He continued:

“The news is devastating for the chess world and all who knew him. It’s impossible to put words to this kind of loss. My love, thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

Chess grandmaster Oleksandr Bortnyk tweeted:

“RIP my great friend Daniel Naroditsky, I still can’t believe.”

Another chess grandmaster wrote on X:

“I've been sitting here numb for the past hour staring at this news. The world lost a brilliant man today. May his memory live on forever, and may we always cherish his contributions to our beautiful game.”

Popular chess news site Chessdom tweeted:

“A tremendous loss for the chess world. We cannot do anything to bring Danya back, but we will make sure his legacy lives on. Daniel Naroditsky was brilliant.”
