Political commentator Matt Walsh hits out at Sydney Sweeney after she opened up on the American Eagle Jeans ad controversy. Earlier in July this year, denim label American Eagle signed Sweeney for its ad campaign. At the time, the ad stirred a huge controversy after the brand interplayed with the words "jeans" and "genes" in the campaign.
Many accused the campaign of promoting racial supremacy. As the controversy deepened, President Trump came in support of the actress after a claim surfaced that she was a registered Republican. In her November 4 interview with GQ, Sydney Sweeney did not address the controversy and said that she would speak on it when she felt like addressing the issue.
Now in a December 5 exclusive with People magazine, Sydney Sweeney spoke about the backlash on the ad. In her interview, she stated that she did not support the "views some people chose to connect to the campaign."
"Anyone who knows me knows that I’m always trying to bring people together. I’m against hate and divisiveness. In the past my stance has been to never respond to negative or positive press but recently I have come to realize that my silence regarding this issue has only widened the divide, not closed it. So I hope this new year brings more focus on what connects us instead of what divides us," she added.
Reacting to Sweeney's latest interview, Walsh said it was "unfortunate though predictable." Matt Walsh saw it as an apology.
"That's the backtrack. That's the walk back. That's the apology. Maybe not the full apology. That's like the leadup to the apology. That's the almost apology, the prologue to the apology. And it's a hint that so, so this coming year, I'm going to bring people together. So, that means she's going to do a whole bunch of woke nonsense over the next year. That's her plan," Walsh commented.
Matt Walsh remarked that Sydney Sweeney wanted to earn the praise of her "fellow Hollywood degenerates"
The Daily Wire host commented that Sydney Sweeney was not the "based right-winger" that many thought her to be. He expressed no surprise and said that people want to be accepted by their peers, especially in the entertainment industry. Matt Walsh suggested that the Americana alum spoke what "Hollywood elitists" wanted to listen to.
"People in entertainment, they want to be adored and accepted and flattered by the people they respect, which are their fellow Hollywood elitists. You know, Sydney Sweeney does not want to be admired or praised by people like you or me. She doesn't want our approval... She could back down and break her silence and say the words they want her to say and all that and earn the praise of her fellow Hollywood degenerates," Matt Walsh remarked.
He added that celebrities often do this. Matt Walsh stated that he was mad at his instincts, as he was not expecting an alleged reversal from Sweeney.
"This is the one time I didn't say it. This is the lesson I learned. The one time I decide to be somewhat optimistic, to not be totally negative all the time. The one time I decided and she makes a fool of me, too," Matt Walsh said.
Matt Walsh suspected that the latest interview came after Sydney Sweeney hired a new publicist. He added that the new publicist might have told her that her recent movie went "flop" due to the American Eagle controversy.
