Following the jury's verdict on Diddy's case on July 2, federal Judge Arun Subramanian delivered the sentence on October 3. After a week-long trial with multiple testimonies of 34 witnesses, the jury found Sean Combs guilty on two counts of prostitution-related charges. The rapper, however, was acquitted on the serious charges of racketeering and s*x trafficking. The sentencing was scheduled for Friday.
After listening to the prosecution, defense, and Diddy himself, the judge sentenced Diddy to 50 months in prison.
"You abused the power and control with women you professed to love. You abused them physically, emotionally and psychologically," the Judge said to the rapper before sentencing.
According to BBC, the judge said that the evidence against the rapper was "massive" while referring to the video in which he could allegedly be spotted beating his former girlfriend, Cassie Ventura. The judge noted that a significant sentence was required.
The prosecution demanded a minimum 11-year sentence, whereas the defense asked for a 14-month sentence and asked for his release later in October. Before the sentence came, Diddy had already served 13 months in prison.
What did Diddy say in his speech before sentencing?
Earlier, on October 2, Combs wrote a letter to the judge and asked for leniency. The music mogul stated that he had been reformed after spending time in prison. He also apologized for his behavior.
On October 3, after the keynote speeches from the defense and the prosecution, the music mogul gave his speech in the courtroom. This was the first time Combs spoke anything on the case since his trial.
The rapper thanked the judge for giving him the opportunity to speak and went on to apologize to all the "victims of domestic violence." He apologized to Cassie Ventra, who was his former girlfriend and the star witness of the prosecution. During his speech before sentencing, Combs says,
"I want to personally apologize again to Cassie Ventura."
The rapper also apologized to another former girlfriend of his, who testified under the pseudonym Jane. He said that he "didn’t mean to hurt" her. The founder of Bad Boy Records also said sorry to his seven children, who earlier gave moving speeches in court before sentencing and asked the judge to give their father a second chance.
As per BBC, while looking at his children, the musician said,
"I’m so sorry. They deserved better."
He also apologized to his mother present in the court. Combs said he was taking responsibility for his actions. Before concluding, he asked for "mercy" from the judge.
"I ask your honor for mercy. I beg your honor for mercy. I don’t have nobody to blame but myself. I know that I’ve learned my lesson," Combs said, addressing the judge.
