Many people worldwide are currently experiencing issues with using ChatGPT. On July 16, 2025, users began reporting problems, including login failures, missing chats, and a specific message that reads, “Unusual activity detected.” These reports quickly spread across social media, including X (formerly Twitter).

The problem is not limited to one country. People in the United States, India, and other parts of Europe and Asia have also reported the same issue. According to various online outage trackers, thousands of users were affected, primarily due to errors while using ChatGPT’s main features.

OpenAI has confirmed that the service is down for many users. They claim to be working on solving the problem. However, as of now, many users are still unable to access the tool properly.

Many users took to X to address their concerns regarding the outrage.

"Is chatgpt down for anyone else? im currently arguing with a stranger online and need it to win badly." said a netizen on X
"I thought it was just me, so maybe it is." said another netizen
"No way ChatGPT is down when I have a 13-page essay due by midnight. I am so cooked." commented another netizen
"Why does ChatGPT always go down in the most important moments. I have an exam in like 24 hours bro" reacted another netizen

What is causing the “Unusual Activity Detected” error on ChatGPT?

The error message, “Unusual activity detected,” usually appears when the system detects something abnormal during usage. This is a security check by OpenAI. It helps safeguard the platform against spam, automated abuse, or bots.

The message can also appear in case a user is connected to a VPN or a shared network, such as public Wi-Fi. Occasionally, this warning can also be triggered by a large number of requests sent too quickly or by browser extensions. In such instances, the system will prevent or reduce access as a safety measure.

Although this can occur to a single user at a given time, when there is an outage on an entire platform, such as the case, it is more probable to be caused by internal server problems. OpenAI has acknowledged the issue and is addressing it. Nonetheless, the same error frequently appears to individuals attempting to use the chatbot.

How many people are affected by the outage?

Reports say that more than 8,000 users in the US alone were affected early on Wednesday. Most complaints are about the chatbot not functioning correctly.

People also report problems with related OpenAI tools, such as Sora, used for generating videos, and Codex, which is used by programmers. These tools are linked to the same servers, so when one has problems, others often do too.

Thousands of people in the US, India, and other regions have reported the same error. While waiting for the issue to be fixed, some users are turning to other AI platforms. Others are watching for updates from OpenAI.
