Rapper DeAndre Cortez Way, popularly known as Soulja Boy, was reportedly released from jail on August 5 due to "insufficient evidence" in connection with firearms possession. According to ABC News, the rapper was arrested on August 3 after LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) authorities for being in possession of a gun. In an email sent to Rolling Stone, a spokesperson confirmed that prosecutors had declined the case.

This marks another arrest Soulja Boy has faced in a series of legal encounters. Billboard revealed he had been previously convicted in 2014 for felony possession of a firearm in public. The news outlet elaborated that he allegedly violated probation in 2019, when police searched his house on a warrant. Additionally, the rapper was found in possession of "military-style" ammunition in 2017, reportedly stolen from the "Huntington Beach police department."

In 2016, fellow rapper, Skrill Dilly, had sued Way for allegedly threatening him to be "killed." During a raid, the rapper was found in possession of firearms.

Soulja Boy released from jail following firearm charges

Soulja Boy has reportedly been released from the LAPD Wilshire Division Jail on Tuesday afternoon. The rapper took to his Instagram channel to celebrate the news and wrote,

"First Day Out."

He added XXL magazine's Instagram post to his story, describing that charges had been dropped.

Apart from felony possession of firearms and violations of probation, the rapper has been involved in other legal difficulties. ABC News reported that the rapper was asked to pay "$235,900" in damages in a 2019 lawsuit filed by a woman who claimed she was assaulted by him at a party.

More recently, Hot New HipHop magazine reported that he was found liable in a "civil case" in April 2025 for allegedly assaulting and emotionally abusing a "former assistant and romantic partner." Over the years, the Crank That hitmaker has been held on various counts and, as the magazine describes it been on probation for most of his "adult life."

Soulja Boy reportedly has a long history of possessing firearms and other associated lawsuits. While the rapper celebrated his time of stepping out of jail, it appears that his actions continue to be under scrutiny.
