DeAndre Cortez Way, popularly known by his stage name, Soulja Boy, was active on Instagram a few hours before he was arrested. In a story post, the 35-year-old rapper had some bling on him and was showing off his watch. At the bottom of the video, he wrote:

"I don’t need no security," followed by the emoji with a zip on its mouth.

Soulja Boy was hosting his birthday celebration at the Poppy nightclub in West Hollywood. The Instagram story was followed up by a video of a scene in the same club behind the DJ booth. In the background, Cortez Way's 2008 hit Kiss Me Thru The Phone can be heard playing.

A few hours later, around 2:30 a.m. PST, the rapper was pulled over by the Los Angeles police, who allegedly saw a firearm. He was arrested on the grounds of suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Soulja Boy's legal issues over the years

Soulja Boy does not have a clean slate when it comes to run-ins with the law. He has been active in the music industry since 2004 and has had a few cases filed against him, including a few arrests over the years.

Back in 2009, Soulja Boy was arrested for one count of obstruction, a misdemeanor, for running away from the police when he was ordered to stop. He was filming a video in an abandoned house at the time. However, he was released on a $550 bond.

In 2011, he was arrested again while traveling in Caroll County, Georgia. He was with four other men when the car was pulled over for a vehicle equipment violation. The police found more than 5 ounces of marijuana in the car. DeAndre was arrested and released on the same day.

He was again arrested in 2014. He was a passenger in his own car, which ran a stop sign in the San Fernando Valley. The police found a loaded handgun in the car, which the rapper claimed was not his. He claimed that he was not even aware of the gun under the seat. Way was sentenced to two years on probation after this incident.

As for cases where Way was sued, one of the most serious allegations was made by his ex-girlfriend, Kayla Myers. She sued him for kidnapping and abuse. In 2019, Myers stated that DeAndre:

"approached yelling profanities, kicked her, stomped on her stomach and bashed her head with a large gun."

He had to pay Kayla $471,800 in damages.

His most recent legal issue was in November 2024, with Rapper Plies, who sued DeAndre, Megan Thee Stallion, and Glorilla over the song Me & My Goons, which was still infringed on Way's Pretty Boy Swag.

Despite the legal drama that Soulja Boy has been going through, he performed at SeaWorld San Diego with Bow Wow on July 12.
