On June 14, 2025, the royal family came together in London to celebrate the birthday of King Charles III, and this grand event is called Trooping the Colour. King Charles, who is 76 and still receiving cancer treatment, came by carriage this year. He stood on the balcony of Buckingham Palace with his wife, Queen Camilla. They generously greeted the crowd and watched the Royal Air Force flypast, as this links the monarchy with the armed forces, a tradition that has been followed for a long time in British life in the royal family.

Two hours of ceremonial parade took place at Horse Guards Parade. More than 1,000 soldiers marched, with 200 horses and 300 musicians. To express their grief for the recent Air India tragedy, the royal family wore black armbands and observed a minute of silence.

Which all Royal Family Members arrived for King Charles III's birthday?

The balcony scene was smaller than in past years. There were 14 people total. They all came to show support for the King and the country.

They included

  • King Charles III and Queen Camilla
  • Prince William, the Prince of Wales, and Princess Catherine (Kate)
  • The three children of the royal family—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis
  • Princess Anne, the King’s sister, with her husband, Sir Timothy Laurence
  • Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, and his wife Sophie
  • First cousins: Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester, with his wife Birgitte, and Prince Edward, Duke of Kent.

Prince William rode on horseback, as did Princess Anne and Prince Edward. Catherine and the children rode in a carriage along The Mall. Six-year-old Prince Louis won hearts with his mimic of King Charles III's salute. The crowd loved his energy.

Not present were Prince Andrew, who no longer carries out royal duties, and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle with their children, who stepped back from royal roles in 2020.

Highlights of the event

Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, made her first public appearance at the parade since her cancer remission. She wore an aquamarine dress with a matching hat and earrings once owned by Queen Elizabeth II. She rode in a carriage with her three children. Princess Charlotte wore a brooch that once belonged to her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, and Prince George arrived with a new haircut.

King Charles chose to ride in a carriage again, as he did last year, because of his health. His continued presence showed strength and unity. The parade held a moment of silence, and all participants wore black armbands. This was in respect for the 241 lives lost in the Air India crash earlier this week.

The Red Arrows took part in the flypast using sustainable fuel for the first time. This reflected the King’s interest in the environment. It showed a royal family standing together in public roles. It balanced solemn remembrance with joy. It also highlighted personal journeys: health challenges, new roles, and changing dynamics. From the King and Queen at the heart to the smiling children on the balcony, it was a moment of quiet pride shared in simple moments.
