More details on Magda Szubanski’s cancer diagnosis

On Thursday, May 29, 2025, Magda Szubanski, via a video, announced her battle with a rare form of cancer, mantle cell lymphoma. In the shared video, Magda appears with a buzz cut and hands wrapped in plaster. She explained that the cancer had already reached stage four, and she cut her hair before it started falling off in the coming weeks.

“Hey, my lovelies, so the hair is shaved in anticipation of it all falling out in a couple of weeks because I have just been diagnosed with a very rare, very aggressive, and serious lymphoma. It is one of the nasty ones, unfortunately.”

She then explained that she was in a hospital in Melbourne where she was relying on the medical team and beautiful friends and family.

“But the good thing is, I'm surrounded by beautiful friends and family and an incredible medical support team. Honestly, we have the best in the world here in Australia, particularly in Melbourne, so I feel very fortunate. It is pretty confronting, but new treatments keep coming down the pipeline all the time,” she added before laughing and asking, “What do you do anyway?”

Magda Szubanski captioned the video:

“Lovelies. Well. Some not great news. I've been diagnosed with stage 4 Mantle Cell Lymphoma—a rare and fast-moving blood cancer. It's serious, but I've started one of the best treatments available (the Nordic protocol), and I'm lucky to be getting absolutely world-class care here in Melbourne. I won't sugar-coat it: it's rough. But I'm hopeful. I'm being lovingly cared for by friends and family, my medical team is brilliant, and I've never felt more held by the people around me.”

The caption continued as Magda Szubanski explained that since her immune system is very fragile, she would lie low and avoid any form of physical contact with anyone.

“I'll be lying very low while my immune system takes a hammering, so if you see me out and about-don't hug me, kiss me, or breathe anywhere near me! Wave enthusiastically from a safe distance and know I love you madly.”

She also explained that she incidentally found out about the cancer when she went for a breast screen.

“This is an obscure cancer and was only discovered incidentally via a breast screen where they found my lymph nodes were up. TBH, I've been feeling pretty ratshit for ages. So I asked for extra blood, and - voila! So the takeaway is - get tested and listen to your body!”
“For now, just know I'm in good hands, good spirits-but I reserve my yuman right to be a cranky old moll. Love you all, Mags,” she concluded the caption.

At the time of writing this article, the Instagram video had garnered over 146,000 likes, 13,500 comments, and more than 22,000 shares.
