More about the astronaut Jim Lovell

Jim Lovell, also known as James Arthur Lovell Jr., was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in March 1928. After high school, he attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison, where he studied engineering.

Jim worked as a naval aviator, flying fighter aircraft for the U.S. Navy after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy. He then worked as a test pilot after graduating from the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School.

In 1965, for Gemini 7, Jim was the command pilot for NASA’s longest crewed mission at the time. During this mission, they pioneered space endurance studies for future Moon missions and performed the first-ever space rendezvous with Gemini 6A.

He was then also selected for Gemini 12 in 1966. He served as the command pilot for the final Gemini mission. During this mission, he helped perfect extravehicular activity (EVA) techniques essential for Apollo Moon landings. In 1968, he was on the Apollo 8 mission and served as a command module pilot. This mission was the first to orbit the Moon.

The last mission he was on was Apollo 13 in 1970, where he served as mission commander. After an oxygen tank explosion, he led his crew through a critical survival and return. Their journey was hailed as one of the greatest displays of crisis leadership in space history.

Announcing the death of the astronaut, his family said:

''We are saddened to announce the passing of our beloved father, USN Captain James A. "Jim" Lovell, a Navy pilot and officer, astronaut, leader, and space explorer. He was 97.''
