Despite its focus on golf, the new Apple TV+ series Stick explores a lot more ground than sports. It centers on the life of Owen Wilson's character, Pryce Cahill, a former professional golfer who achieved success.
However, following a highly publicized career collapse, he is currently grappling not only with his reputation but also with his sense of identity and purpose in life. In an attempt to make things better, Pryce crosses paths with a young golf prodigy, Santi Wheeler.
Pryce quickly realized how skilled Santi is and offered to train him for the upcoming championship. Little did anyone know that this decision wouldn't just lead to humorous moments, but a deep exploration of each character's life.
Since golf plays a major role in Stick, it wasn't an easy task to film the series, especially for those who never played the sport. As shared by Apple TV, Owen Wilson, who brought Pryce to life, said,
"It's a challenging sport", while his co-star Peter Dager (Santi) mentioned being in love with the game now.
The makers ensured professional golfers like Collin Morikawa got involved in the series. The golfer can be heard saying that he was impressed with Danger's game, but "he talks his game up so much", and even joked that he owes him money.
The cast had to put in all their efforts to bring authentic portrayals of their characters, especially when they are at the golf course. Each actor had a very different experience filming this sports-comedy, with Marc Maron being completely unaware of how to play this game.

Stick Cast talks about their experience and first impression on filming the Apple TV series

The newest sports comedy on Apple TV+, Stick, explores friendships, rivalries, and second chances in addition to swinging clubs, all against the backdrop of the competitive world of professional golf. However, the cast's connection to the sport itself was particularly noteworthy, as the series combines intense emotional moments with on-course drama.
While some actors like Timothy Olyphant (Clark) were familiar with golf long before joining the show, others, including Marc Maron, who plays Pryce's closest friend, Mitts, were total newcomers.
During the same interview, Maron shared:
"I have zero experience with golf. And I do not love the sport. And I don't know anything about it."
Despite his inexperience, Marc Maron stepped into the series with a main role, and fans who've watched the episodes would agree that Mitts is indeed an entertaining character. He doesn't like Santi's mother, Elena, but knows that the kid is passionate about golf and lets Pryce bring them into the RV.
Together, they all head out for Santi's amateur championship, where the young man impresses everyone, but without Pryce's coaching. So far, Stick seems to be an engaging show about a man who loves golf but doesn't really know how to train the young man and form a strong bond with him.
During another interview with Men's Health, Owen Wilson shed light on what Stick actually is. The actor said:
"Sports is just the backdrop. How do you connect with any human being? Figuring out how to navigate these relationships is what it’s like to be human."
As seen in episode 3, Pryce was a bit intense while training Santi, which led to a drift between the two. Thankfully, Zero motivates Santi to continue his game and ultimately forces Pryce to think about how to build a relationship and connect with Santi.
