A Different World reboot? Debbie Allen talks possibilities and the power of storytelling

Earlier this year, Variety reported that Netflix is bringing back A Different World, a popular show, with a reboot series. The spinoff series follows the lives of the students of Hillman College, a historically black college in Virginia.

A Different World is available to stream on Netflix now. The outlet also reported that Hollywood veteran Debbie Allen has been tapped to direct the pilot episode of the reboot series. However, she shared that there is no concrete plan set for the reboot series yet, and we have to wait more to hear about it.

Allen has directed 144 episodes of the original series, starting from Season 2.

Debbie Allen talks about the possibilities of A Different World reboot

While attending the 23rd annual Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival, Debbie Allen was interviewed by Variety, where she discussed numerous issues like representation, the power of storytelling, and also updated about Netflix’s plan of making a reboot of A Different World.

Allen, who executive-produced and directed 144 episodes of A Different World, has been revealed to be directing the pilot of the series' reboot. The Grey’s Anatomy alum, who has appeared as Dr. Catherine Avery/Fox and has also directed several episodes of the medical drama, shared that there is no commitment for the season yet, but they are hopeful about the situation.

Allen also discussed how this is the perfect and right time to tell stories related to college students. She said:

"A Different World is on Netflix right now. Every episode, all those six years of great work are there for everyone to see. If you talk to me in a week, I might say we’re going. But what we’ve done so far, since we don’t have the commitment yet for the season, was kind of like a proof of life."

She continued:

"It’s been a really exciting experience, and we are just waiting to see what happens next. We’re not sure yet, but I can tell you this: If there’s any time that the world needs to hear from young people on college campuses, it’s now."

The reboot series of Netflix’s A Different World will introduce a new generation. It will focus on the life of Dwayne and Whitley’s (protagonists of the original series) daughter.

The writer of the reboot series is said to be Felicia Pride. Debbie Allen will be joined by Tom Werner, who was also the producer of the original series with her. Reggie Bythewood, Mandy Summers, and Gina Prince-Bythewood will also be joining the A Different World reboot as executive producers.

The reboot series also marks Netflix’s first attempt at producing pilots for potential series.
