Channel 5's feel-good dramedy All Creatures Great and Small Season 6, is now on PBS Masterpiece.The premiere episode of All Creatures Great and Small Season 6 takes a three-year leap from the Season 5 finale, and it takes us to the events of early May of 1945. Tristan's back from the war, Herriots' family has grown to four, and Mrs. Hall has relocated to Suderland to live with her family. And for Siegfried, he's grown old, irritable, and more forgetful. In short, Skeldale House is a complete mess.All Creatures Great and Small Season 6 Episode 1, Gathering the Flock, begins with Archie, a local farmer, grazing his sheep. James drives to the Alderson farm to have breakfast, and little Jimmy greets him. Yes, he's now almost four and a half years old. James apologizes for not coming for dinner the previous night. Turns out, the vet clinic is down on business. James rants to Helen, he tells her,"We are really struggling without Mrs. H. The practice is a state. We're short on stocks, our profits are down. I'm not sure if he's remembering to charge half our clients."Little Jimmy accompanies James to Archie's farm. While James helps a sheep give birth, they hear a stray dog barking. They rush towards it and find Fly, the sheepdog, caught in the barbed wire. James brings Fly to the clinic. Jimmy and Archie accompany him. Everything's scattered, and there's a rat hovering around. Jimmy sees a pygmy horse and calls for James. Jimmy's voice wakes Siegfried, and he's not alone. He was with Susan. Jimmy catches them together, and Siegfried tries to silence him with a few pennies.Tristan is back, and turns out Siegfried forgot to pick him up from the station. Siegfried tries to lie about the awkward situation that he's gotten himself into, but Tristan and James ain't buying it. Tristan and James visit her and tell her about the current condition of Skeldale House. Deep down, they knew it was only Mrs. Hall who could handle both the clinic and Siegfreid. James and Tristan welcome her, and she learns that Siegfried isn't aware of her return. She later tidies it up. When Siegfried returns, he's a bit taken aback. Honestly, he never expected Mrs. Hall to return. Their conversation gets a bit awkward. Siegfried isn't too expressive, and when he does, it isn't in the best way possible. He's good at heart, and no one understands him better than Mrs. Hall.But Siegfried argues with Mrs. Hall when she tells him how James and Tris were worried for him, and thus they requested her to come back. This leaves Siegfreid furious; his harsh words hurt Mrs. Hall. He storms out of the house in anger. Siegfried has a habit of pushing away people who care for him. In the morning, Siegfried is quite rude to Mrs. Hall, and when she offers to help him, he shouts at her, leaving her on the verge of tears. Mrs. Hall finally decides to leave for Suderland. It's a tough decision, but she has made up her mind.Meanwhile, Tristan visits Maggie, who's juggling between motherhood and her job. He learns that's her husband off to Burma, and she's worried. Tristan later visits a war memorial on a hilltop at Niddsdale. He hears a faint whimp. Turns out, it's one of Archie's sheepdogs. He brings him to the clinic. Archie informs them that he has lost his flock, and Fly, too. Siegfried blames himself, as it was he who said Fly was capable of working, when in reality she was aging and had arthritis. Later, James, Tristan, and Siegfried help Archie find the sheep.Turns out, Fly has managed to keep them together, but she's injured. People rejoice when they learn that the war's over. They hug their close ones, and happy tears roll down their cheeks.At the station, Siegfried manages to stop Mrs. Hall. Siegfried apologizes to Mrs. Hall and speaks his heart out. Mrs. Hall notices people rejoicing at the station, and Siegfried tells her that the war's over. Mrs. Hall hugs him and breaks down. Later at the town square, they gather to celebrate. Elsewhere, Tristan takes his military cross and puts it in the drawer. Mrs. Hall finally joins the celebration.
