What is All Creatures Great and Small about?

youtube-cover

All Creatures Great and Small tells the heart-warming tale about a young vet, James Herriot, who joins the Skeldale House in Darrowby. Skeldale House might seem like a regular rural clinic for animals, but it's much more than that.

Siegfried Franon runs the place and is the caring vet surgeon. At first glance, he might seem to be a little short-tempered, but deep down, he's kind, empathetic, and loving. You might also find him being fun. Among others, Mrs. Audrey Hall, the housekeeper, also plays a pivotal role. She's the thread that keeps the clinic together.

Since the story is set in the late 1930s, we get a glimpse of rural life. While working as a vet, James gets along with the residents and farmers.

Meanwhile, James falls in love with Helen. They get married by the end of Season 3. Helen gives birth to their son Jimmy, but due to the war-like situation, James leaves to join the forces. Helen, who's just given birth, longs for James, but she knows that fighting for the country is essential.

Nicholas Ralph reprises his role as James, Samuel West as Siegfreid, Callum Woodhouse as Tristan, Rachel Shenton plays Helen, and Anna Madeley plays Mrs. Hall.

In All Creatures Great and Small Season 5, we saw how everybody was prepping for the war. On one hand, Tristan and James leave for the warfront, while Mrs. Hall, Mrs. Pumphrey, and Helen try their best to help. Mrs. Hall even volunteers to be the blackout warden, and she manages it well along with her housekeeping duties. Even though Siegfried doubts her, she proves that she can do both.

Mrs. Pumphrey also donates her mansion and wealth to the war. Her mansion is turned into a recovery hospital for the sick and the suffering.

James gets diagnosed with brucellosis, and he's sent back from the RAF. Helen feels relieved to see James back, and he rejoins Skeldale House. Although James still has bouts of hallucination due to his conditions, which cause high fever. In the end, Tristan and Siegfried mend their differences as well. They finally reveal their feelings, and it seems like they are making efforts to stick together. Tristan even promises to avoid going to pubs to spend more time with Siegfried.

However, in the end, tragic news shook Mrs. Hall. The news? Her son, Edward's ship that was sunk by Japan, and only half of the crew survived. After two weeks of no contact, when Edward called his mother to let her know that he survived and he was in a hospital in Singapore, Mrs. Hall was finally relieved.

Mrs. Hall found solace in an injured fox when she was worrying about her son. She took it in and insisted that it should be taken care of. For Mrs. Hall, the injured fox might stand as a symbol of the last ray of hope.
