When Netflix says "crime drama," you know there’s trouble brewing, but Amsterdam Empire takes it to a new level!

Think glitz, greed, and green...literally. The new Dutch series will be looking into Amsterdam’s cannabis underworld. With (X-Men and Taken star) Famke Janssen returning to Dutch screens, the actress will mark her debut as an executive producer in her home country.

The trailer (which dropped on October 2) has set the internet abuzz with its visuals and mayhem. It teases a world where money and morals don’t mix, and where betrayal is the business. Janssen stars opposite Jacob Derwig (Klem, Bankier van het Verzet), in Netflix’s sleekest European drama yet.

Amsterdam Empire release date and streaming details

The show lands on Netflix on October 30, 2025, after its world premiere on October 21 in (obviously) Amsterdam. The premiere will have the cast and crew in attendance, including Janssen, who’s back after years in Hollywood.

As a Netflix exclusive, the series will stream globally. So, both Dutch fans and international viewers can binge the rise (and possible fall) of Amsterdam’s fictional mogul. Expect subtitles, high production values, and that European noir flavor Netflix has perfected in Undercover and Snabba Cash!

With eight episodes rumored for Season 1, we'll see glamour, street-level danger, and dialogue that could slice through Amsterdam’s coffee shops.

Amsterdam Empire cast and characters

At the heart of this storm are Betty and Jack van Doorn. They used to be a power couple who have now turned enemies.

1) Famke Janssen plays Betty van Doorn, a former pop diva with resolve and a grudge. When her husband’s affair with a journalist goes public, she swaps stage lights for revenge, and she’s got intel on every one of his secrets.

2) Jacob Derwig takes on Jack van Doorn, the founder of Jackal, Amsterdam’s most successful coffee shop empire. He’s rich, ruthless, and sure he’s untouchable...until Betty proves otherwise.

The supporting cast reads like a who’s who of Dutch TV: Elise Schaap (Undercover), Jade Olieberg (Ares), Jesse Mensah, Romana Vrede, Raymond Thiry, Victor Löw, Chris Nietvelt, and Yannick van de Velde.

Behind the camera, the creators (Nico Moolenaar, Bart Uytdenhouwen, and Piet Matthys) are the ones behind Undercover and Ferry. Jonas Govaerts and Max Porcelijn are the directors of Amsterdam Empire, while Janssen and Moolenaar are the executive producers.

What’s the story of Amsterdam Empire?

At first glance, Amsterdam Empire might seem like another crime saga, but it’s about betrayal, and who’s left standing when the smoke clears.

youtube-cover

Jack van Doorn has built an empire out of coffee shops and deals in backrooms. But the moment his affair goes public, his empire crumbles. But it is not from the police or his rivals, but from his wife (Betty), whose revenge is surgical. And where loyalty is currency, hers is about to crash the market!

If you are going to tune into Amsterdam Empire, expect a lot of scheming against the backdrop of Amsterdam’s dangerous cannabis industry.
