On October 6, 2025, Amazon officially greenlit Ballard for a second season, much to the relief of the fans of the police procedural. A spin-off of the Bosch series, headlined by Titus Welliver, the latest update breaks a pattern that has been associated with Welliver's projects for a while: abrupt cancellations. The actor received a major boost in popularity after the Bosch series.
It must be noted that Titus Welliver has been playing LAPD detective Harry Bosch for a decade, as fans saw him in the role first in Bosch (2014-2021) and its sequel series, Bosch: Legacy, which ran for three seasons. Many believe that Legacy was cancelled when it was reported in September 2024 that season 3 would be its last. This was another one in the long list of shows featuring Welliver that was abruptly cancelled.
Prime Video renewing Ballard breaks a pattern that has followed Titus Welliver's projects for a while:
It must be noted that Titus Welliver has earned critical and popular appreciation for his performance in his cancelled projects. The long line of cancelled projects featuring Welliver was not on him. One of the most significant projects that he appeared in the past few years, apart from Bosch, is the fourth season of Titans, where he played the Man of Steel's arch nemesis, Lex Luthor.
While fans liked Welliver's interpretation of Luthor, his role was very short as the character died in the closing minutes of the season 4 premiere, and the series was cancelled soon after.
This is why Ballard's cancellation is good news for the fans of the actor. However, it should also be noted that while Bosch cameoed in the series across different episodes of the series, Welliver has not been confirmed as a part of season 2 yet. However, it is expected that he may appear in the second season, which was renewed just a day ago.
The Head of US SVOD TV Development and Series – Co-Productions for Amazon MGM Studios, Lauren Lancaster, said this while confirming season 2:
“We are excited to share that the ‘Bosch’ universe will continue to expand with a second season of ‘Ballard’ for our global Prime Video customers. The audience response to ‘Ballard’ has been phenomenal, resonating with audiences worldwide thanks to its gripping storytelling and outstanding performances from Maggie Q and the entire cast. We can’t wait for fans to experience everything Season Two has in store.”
Executive producers and showrunners Kendall Sherwood and Michael Alaimo gave this statement in the press release confirming the renewal:
“We’re so grateful to have the chance to continue Ballard’s story. It’s a pleasure to dive deeper into these characters and this world, and seeing audiences resonate with their stories is incredibly rewarding. We get to work with such a talented, dedicated team who bring this universe to life – and we’re thrilled to be able to continue doing just that. Can’t wait for everyone to see what we’ve cooked up!”
Ballard's renewal also means that fans will expect Titus Welliver's other MGM+ crime drama, The Westies, to be good enough for a season 2 renewal.
What is The Westies about?
Titus Welliver joined the cast of the MGM+ series, described as a crime drama set in the 80s. In addition to Welliver, other cast members of the series include actors like Hamish Allan-Headly, Hilary McCormack, J.K. Simmons, Jessica Frances Dukes, Tom Brittney, Sarah Bolger, Stanley Morgan, and Vincent Walsh. Named after an NYC gang of the same name, the official description reads:
“The series is set in the early 1980s when the construction of the Jacob Javitz Convention Center on the Westies’ home turf in Hell’s Kitchen promises a financial windfall. Despite being outnumbered fifty-to-one by the Five Families of the Italian Mafia, the Westies’ legendary brutality and cunning have given them the leverage necessary to share the spoils through a fragile détente. But internal conflict between the brash younger generation and the old-school leadership threatens to set a match to this powder keg, which will sweep the Westies into the FBI’s ever-deepening investigation into the Italian mafia.”
Cameras haven't started rolling on the second season of the Bosch: Legacy spin-off, as of now. But the entire first season is available to stream on Prime Video.
