Calabasas is an upcoming Netflix series that is being executive-produced by Kim Kardashian. The show was first announced in April 2024 with Pretty Little Liars creator I. Marlene King serving as the original creator.
The project is undergoing a major change after being in development for more than a year. King has now left the show and has been replaced by Chris Van Dusen, who is best known for his work on another hit Netflix series, Bridgerton.
Calabasas is an adaptation of Via Bleidner’s book If You Lived Here You’d Be Famous By Now. It tells the story of a teenage girl whose life turns upside down when she joins an elite school. Everybody in the school has put on a facade and is pretending to be someone they are not.
Chris Van Dusen will create Netflix’s Calabasas
Chris Van Dusen is going to adapt If You Lived Here You’d Be Famous By Now for Netflix. He will serve as the creator, showrunner, and executive producer of Calabasas. The news has come after I. Marlene King worked on the project for over a year. Neither King nor Netflix has announced the reason for her departure.
King is best known for creating the teen drama Pretty Little Liars. She has also worked on shows like Famous in Love, Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, Pretty Dirty Secrets, If These Walls Could Talk, and Ravenswood.
On the other hand, Dusen is famous for creating Netflix’s massively popular romantic drama Bridgerton. He also served as a showrunner on the series during its first two seasons. Dusen has worked as a co-producer on several hit shows like Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, and Private Practice.
Kim Kardashian, a Calabasas native herself, serves as an executive producer on the upcoming Netflix series along with her American Horror Story co-star Emma Roberts. The rest of the executive producers include Alexandra Milchan, Karah Preiss, and Matt Matruski.
The show follows a 16-year-old girl who transfers from a Midwestern Catholic school to the elite Calabasas High. As she attends her new school, her life changes completely. She notices that people at the school are hiding their real personalities. The official synopsis of the show reads:
“[The show] follows Via, a 16-year-old sheltered Midwestern Catholic school girl whose world is turned upside down when her family moves and she’s forced to transfer to the fast world of Calabasas High where nothing is as it appears and where everyone is trying to be someone else. It’s a place where dreams come true … but not without complications and sometimes unforeseen consequences.”
The cast of the series has not been announced as of now. Details are also awaited about its production and the release timeline. Via Bleidner’s If You Lived Here You'd Be Famous by Now was launched in 2021 and was inspired by the author’s own experience growing up in the affluent Californian city.
