Jason Hood’s character in Chief of War might be becoming one of the most terrifying antagonists. He plays Captain Simon Metcalfe, who has brought a crew of foreigners to the islands of Hawaii. He is the embodiment of all the colonial exploitation and suppression that the native people would end up suffering from.

However, this is not the only role of the New Zealand actor that the audience came to despise. In 2011 and 2012, Jason Hood appeared in the acclaimed period drama, Spartacus. He first appeared in the prequel series, Gods of the Arena, and later in Spartacus: Vengeance. He played a character named Cossutius, a wealthy Roman, who exploited the underprivileged people around him.

His character was among the powerful people of Rome who tortured the slaves for their own fun and who would forget his treatment of Diona in Gods of the Arena when r*pes her and makes her a s*x slave.

More on this in our story.

Chief of War: Jason Hood’s Metcalfe has some similarities with Spartacus’s Cossutius

In Chief of War, he is the antagonist who introduces them to the horrifying ways the Britishers exploited native cultures and lands. While Jason Momoa’s Ka’iana is aware of the dangers that Hood’s character will bring to the Hawaiian islands, he is unable to convince the king, who wants to solve the matter as peacefully as he can.

However, as time goes by, Metcalfe’s true personality and greed start to become more prominent as he steals sandalwood and attacks a peaceful village. While Metcalfe is manipulative and cunning, the one thing that makes Hood’s characters in both the historical dramas is their wickedness.

Jason Hood’s Cossutius was first introduced in Gods of the Arena, the prequel series of Spartacus, where he did not hide his evil nature from the very beginning. Through his treatment of Lucretia’s maid, Diona, Cossutius’s sadistic personality was depicted in the period drama.

His attempt to torture Diona by ordering a gladiator to r*pe her and later doing the same was one of the most horrifying depictions of powerful people's inhumane treatment of the slaves. This was also one of the significant moments that resulted in the erotic-themed parties that took place in the House of Batiatus.

Cossutius’s death in Spartacus: Vengeance

While in Chief of War, Jason Hood’s character was spared by Ka’iana after Kamehameha confronted the latter; his character’s death in Spartacus was the perfect example of poetic justice. In Gods of the Arena, Hood’s Cossutius was shown enjoying the execution of his victim, Diona, when she tried to escape.

In Spartacus: Vengeance, it can be seen that Cossutius’s methods of pleasure had not changed, and inflicting pain upon others was still one of his modes of enjoyment as he takes part in torturing Acer. However, Season 2 of the period drama was also the last time we saw the terrifying character of Cossutius.

In Episode 5 of Season 2, he was killed by a spear that Spartacus aimed toward Glaber, but he dodged it, and the weapon speared Jason Hood’s character. His death took place in the chaos of the same arena, where he enjoyed watching Diona’s execution in Gods of the Arena.
