When Dexter: Resurrection sliced onto screens, fans wondered if Michael C. Hall’s return as the Bay Harbor Butcher would clean up the mess from New Blood.

Instead, Dexter: Resurrection Season 1 gave us suspense, blood, and more questions than answers. The finale tied up some threads while throwing fresh questions into the fire, thus setting up Season 2.

Paramount+ and Showtime are basking in the show’s ratings, and Hall is being tipped for an overdue Emmy. But for fans, the resurrection comes with cliffhangers. Here are the biggest questions from Dexter: Resurrection that keep the show hanging!

Five questions Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 needs to answer after the Season 1 finale

1) Will the NYPD crack the Leon Prater case?

Detective Claudette and her team stumbled into a true-crime fever dream --- Batista’s body, Leon Prater missing, and a weapon with Prater’s prints.

Toss in a folder about the "New York Ripper," and Dexter’s cleanup isn’t airtight. Claudette won't let evidence slide, and her instincts are already circling back to Dexter. If she connects Batista with the Bay Harbor Butcher to the scene in Prater’s lair, Dexter might have a new enemy...one wearing a badge.

2) Will Dexter choose Harrison or the Dark Passenger?

The finale left Dexter at a crossroads. He got the killer files from Prater’s trophy, but it could send him on a deadly national road trip.

At the same time, he promised to be empathetic, hold onto Harrison, and live an everyday life. But can the Dark Passenger coexist with fatherhood? History says no. Dexter-on-the-road Season 2 could destroy the bond with his son.

3) How dangerous is Al Jolly, really?

On the surface, Al Jolly is a benign member of Prater’s murder club. He feels like Dexter-light --- a goofy family man who loves snipping ponytails!

But Al saw Dexter’s face. He knows what happened in Prater’s house. Dexter left behind Al’s file for the NYPD. That might turn Al into a loose cannon who could either expose or target Dexter on Dexter: Resurrection Season 2.

4) Will Charley resurface?

Charley (Uma Thurman) left New York in the Dexter: Resurrection finale, but her story feels unfinished. Her truce with Dexter (spare Harrison in exchange for freedom) can easily make her an ally or enemy. Both killers live in the gray of morality and survival, and know too much about each other.

A reunion could double Dexter’s odds or pit him against his mirror.

5) Will Joey Quinn hunt down Dexter?

Batista’s death was the gut-punch no one saw coming. While the NYPD was in the dark, Quinn managed to call Batista before sparking a trail to Dexter.

Viewers remember Quinn’s suspicion in Dexter Season 5, and with Batista gone, he’s the perfect candidate to reignite the Bay Harbor Butcher investigation. If he steps into the hunt, Quinn could be Dexter’s downfall or next victim.

Watch Dexter: Resurrection on Paramount+.

Paramount Global has canceled Dexter: Original Sin and commissioned a writers' room for Dexter: Resurrection Season 2. If funding goes through, the latter will be available by the spring/summer of 2026.
