HBO’s popular crime drama, Mare of Easttown, premiered in 2021 and was among the best shows of the year. From cases about the disappearances and murders of young women to portraying characters with struggling personal lives, the show excelled in narrating an intriguing and suspenseful story.
The two young girls in the centre of the story are Erin and Katie Bailey. While Erin dies at the beginning of the series, Katie, who disappeared a year ago, was found alive at the end of the series. She was found by Mare (Kate Winslet) and Evan Peters’s Detective Colin Zabel in the kidnapper, Wayne Potts’s attic.
More on this in our story.
Did Katie die in Mare of Easttown? Character’s fate explored
At the beginning of Mare of Easttown, Winslet’s Mare is asked to open the case of Katie Bailey, who had been missing for a year. The case was reopened due to Katie’s mother, Dawn, pressuring the police to find her daughter.
While Katie’s disappearance was one of the major storylines, the show also grappled with the mysterious death of another young girl, Erin McMenamin. Katie was also presumed dead at the beginning of the series, but was later discovered to be alive and being held in a hidden room at Bennie’s Tavern.
She was discovered alive by Missy Sager, who was kidnapped and put into the same room in Episode 4 of the HBO series. Mare and Zabel learn about the kidnapper with the help of a girl who escaped from being kidnapped by the man, and she gives the detectives the partial numbers of his blue van’s license plate.
With the help of the information, the detectives reach the kidnapper’s house. There, Missy and Katie alert the duo by banging the pipe in the secret room where they were being held. This results in a fight between the kidnapper and the detectives, in which Peters’ character, Zabel, is killed by the culprit.
Later, an injured Mare kills the kidnapper and rescues both the girls.
Mare of Easttown: Wayne Potts kidnapped Katie

In the penultimate episode of Mare of Easttown, the kidnapper’s identity is revealed to be Wayne Potts, played by Jeb Kreager. Katie was not his first victim. It was revealed that before her, he had also kidnapped a girl named Hilary from a different town.
Katie became his second victim, and Missy his third. The motive of Potts’ crimes is not explicitly revealed due to his being killed by Mare before he could confess to his crimes. However, it is implied that he chose victims who appear to be vulnerable, as in Katie’s case, she was an addict, while Missy was an escort.
It is not shown how he kidnapped Katie, but in the case of Missy, he had strangled her and taken her to the secret room where he had kept Katie Bailey. At the end of the Brad Inglesby series, both the criminals- the killer of Erin and the kidnapper of Katie were revealed.
