In The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2, Sauron successfully manipulates Celebrimbor into forging the Dwarven and Men’s rings of power. Besides that, the series also brings former Captain Elendil into more focus than he was seen in Season 1.
At the end of Season 2, Elendil (Lloyd Owen), a loyal and noble Númenorian who is also the direct ancestor of Aragorn, an important character in The Lord of the Rings lore, is seen fleeing from an Al-Pharazon-occupied Númenor, with the sword Narsil, also known as the ‘white flame’, in his possession.
This storyline will be more important for Elendil and Númenor’s future in Season 3, as he returns to free Míriel, the rightful heir to Númenor’s throne.
More on this in our story.
What happened to Captain Elendil in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2? Details explored
Season 2 narrated the story of how Sauron, now appearing as Annatar, tricked the Elven-smith, Celebrimbor, into forging seven Dwarven and nine Men’s rings of power. Although Celebrimbor tried to protect those rings from him by giving them to Galadriel, he still obtained them from her.
The other important storyline from The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 was of the political coup in Númenor. As Kemen decides to make Pelargir the fortress of his sea kingdom, Elendil refuses to acknowledge Al-Pharazon in charge of the kingdom.
His support for Míriel, the rightful heir to the sea kingdom, makes him lose his position as the captain of the elite force, the Sea Guard. Even after his daughter’s pleas, he remains loyal to the queen and gives up his position.
However, not bowing to the new head of the Kingdom got him in trouble as he and several others are now deemed as the followers of Sauron. So, to survive being captured, he had to flee in Season 2. Furthermore, he is given the White flame, which has historical significance and will later be owned by his son, Isildur, during the war, where he will cut Sauron’s finger with it.
At the end of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2, Elendil’s loyalty and integrity toward the queen become a reason for Al-Pharazon to label the former a traitor, as he did not accept and fled Númenor.
What will happen to Elendil in Season 3? Speculations explored
While in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2, the former captain of the Sea Guard saved his life by fleeing his kingdom, the upcoming season might focus on how the father and son, Isildur, will meet up again and free Númenor and other places from the political tyranny that was to rise.
In the Tolkien books, Elendil is described as the King of the Kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor, which Aragorn will lead in the future. As per The Rings of Power, Elendil is far away from becoming the King in Season 2, but the time jump that will take place in Season 3 might bring him closer to achieving the greatness that the character deserves.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 is available to stream on Prime Video.
