Does Drew die in Tell Me Lies? Character’s fate explored

Hulu’s series, Tell Me Lies, has become a fan favorite series since its premiere in 2022. Based on Carola Lovering’s novel, the drama series narrates the complicated relationship story of Lucy Albright and Stephen DeMarco in two timelines: 2008, when they were in college, and 2015, when they meet again during a friend’s wedding.

While portraying the tumultuous relationship of the leads, Hulu’s Tell Me Lies also introduced us to new characters that were created for the TV series. One of those characters was Drew (Benjamin Wadsworth), Wrigley’s brother, who was involved in Macy’s accident that happened in Season 1. While he did not appear much in Season 2 of Tell Me Lies, Drew appeared in the finale and died tragically due to an overdose.

Does Drew die in Tell Me Lies? Character’s fate explored

Just like every other character, Drew is also introduced to be joining Baird College in Tell Me Lies Season 1. However, his excitement about starting a new chapter in his life dies down after he finds himself being involved in Macy's car accident and eventual death. In Episode 2 of Season 1, Drew reveals to his brother, Wrigley, and Stephen that he was drunk-driving and it was his car that drove Macy’s car off the road.

He begs them both not to tell the cops about it. However, his brother ends up revealing it to his girlfriend Pippa, under the influence of alcohol. It is later revealed that not just Drew, but Macy was also drunk while driving, and was with Stephen, who, after the crash, left her there dying, not to get involved in the case.

He reveals half of this information to Lucy, who is outraged by Drew’s involvement in the case and writes an application to the college administration about it, and gets him expelled. After being expelled from college, Drew thinks it was Pippa who was behind this and attacks his own brother, thinking he ruined his life further.

After appearing in the finale of Season 1 and attacking Wrigley, Drew again appeared in the Season 2 finale of Tell Me Lies, where he is reunited with his brother. However, their reunion ends up being their last moments together as Drew dies of an overdose on Wrigley’s pain medication, which he had been prescribed after their fight in the Season 1 finale.

Drew’s tragic death was one of the most heartbreaking moments from Tell Me Lies, and left Wrigley more emotionally distraught than he already was.

Creator’s comments on Drew’s death in Tell Me Lies Season 2

Drew’s death in the Tell Me Lies Season 2 finale was tragic for several characters, but it hit his brother, Wrigley, the deepest. However, to make Wrigley’s character suffer from this heartwrenching pain was the narrative from the beginning, for creator Meaghan Oppenheimer.

During an interview with Variety, she revealed that Drew was always going to die; the decision that she had to make was whether to kill him in Season 1 or Season 2.

She stated:

"During Season 1, I thought that it would be the ending of Season 1, and then there was too much, and we didn’t need it. So I always knew he was going to die. Ben is so great and so lovely that when we started the writers’ room for Season 2, I was like, “Is there any way we can have him around?” It didn’t make sense any other way."

She continued:

"I really wanted Wrigley to be destroyed by the end of the season. I know that’s so terrible to say! We’ve seen him in the future, and I wanted to understand why he’d gotten to that point, because he is clearly a mess in the future years."
