Tony Gilroy's Andor Season 2 finally concluded Cassian's journey from a loner to a radicalized rebel against the Empire in the final three episodes.
A prequel to Rogue One, the series Andor concluded each character arc befittingly until the events of the 2016 film. While all the major actors reprised their respective characters in the show's sophomore season, Andy Serkis' Kino Loy and Belle Swarc's Kerri (Cassian's sister) were not a part of Andor Season 2.
While Kerri helped set Cassian's journey against the Empire in motion in Season 1, Kino Loy helped him pull off the biggest prison break. After the Narkina 5 prison arc, Loy reveals that he can't swim, suggesting a tragic future for his character.
Fans appreciated Kino's sacrifice, and Tony Gilroy did not want to reduce its effect by including Kino in Season 2.
Talking about that iconic scene in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he said:
“Andy dropped the mic, man.''

Tony Gilroy opens up on Kino Loy's absence in Andor Season 2
Andy Serkis' breakthrough performance as Kino Loy in Season 1 made him a fan-favorite, and fans were excited to see whether he would return to help Cassian and his cause again in Andor Season 2.
Kino Loy did not return in Andor Season 2, and his fate remains unknown after he helped Cassian and other rebel inmates pull off the biggest prison break in Star Wars. Realising that the Empire would not release anybody, Kino and Cassian decided to take matters into their own hands.
After pulling off a dangerous prison break and helping the inmates escape from the floating island prison, Kino drops this heartbreaking line:
“I can’t swim.”
This became one of the saddest events in the Star Wars universe, with Kino's fate still unknown in Andor Season 2. Talking about that iconic moment and Kino's absence in Andor Season 2, Tony Gilroy told The Hollywood Reporter:
“What am I going to do that’s going to be better than what we did? All it does is minimize that moment. I knew a lot of people were talking about whether we had a way of [bringing him back]. But I didn’t want to have that sort of coincidental environment.”

Tony Gilroy explains why Cassian's sister was absent from Andor Season 2
Another character who was absent from Andor Season 2 is Cassian's sister Kerri. While she had limited screen time in Season 1, she somewhat set her brother's arc in motion, becoming an important part of the Rebel Army. Season 1 starts with Cassian trying to find his sister, which leads him to kill two Imperial Security Bureau officers and sets the events of his rebellion in motion.
According to Tony Gilroy, Kerri's absence in Andor Season 2 helps in shaping Cassian's journey, which is why she remains absent from the second chapter:
“And the sister, in the beginning, is so much more interesting to me as a deficit. She’s much more valuable to me for Cassian as an absence...''
He added:
''As he says in the end, ‘Maybe I should stop saving people.’ His need to return and save people and to be a savior and the compulsion to do that comes from this hole in his life, and I didn’t really didn’t want to fill that in.”
