Duffer Brothers answer a major fan question about Eleven’s ending in Stranger Things finale

The Hawkins crew gathered together for one last time in the Stranger Things finale. The air was different this time, for some of them became interdimensional space travelers in the Mind Flayer's layer. It ended there and then with Henry Creel (Jamie Campbell Bower) down. Hawkins is safe. Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and the team did it.

But we lost her. Or at least we thought until Mike (Finn Wolfhard) decided to tell a story at the end, and everyone chose to believe him. For them, she is still alive. For us too. For the Duffer Brothers, if she is alive, they have an answer as to what to expect after that, which is to never see her again. Ross Duffer explained this to Variety, saying:

"If she were alive, the way I would see it is no. Any contact would risk bringing her back out in the open and starting the cycle again. So, in the story that Mike’s telling, I don’t think he sees a version where they reconnect."

However, we are expecting to see the Hawkins crew rendezvous again in the upcoming animated spin-off, Stranger Things: Tales from '85. It has to be canon, and if it is, then Eleven will have to return to her hideout again after the new threats have been defeated.

Mike gave the lost sister a worthy ending in the Stranger Things finale

It almost seemed like Vecna was controlling Eleven's sister, Eight (Linnea Berthelsen), as she had convinced her to sacrifice themselves inside the Bridge. However, it wasn't the case, and Eight was serious about what she had told her sister, which is that this world would use them to create more children like them.

She died at the hands of one of Dr. Kay's soldiers as Murray (Brett Gelman) destroyed that plane in a moment full of courage. Now, Eleven had lost her sister and chose to vanish alongside the Bridge. But she told Mike that he would understand her decision.

So, as the story of Stranger Things came to an end, Mike and his friends gathered to play Dungeons & Dragons, which led him to craft a new story where he imagined the future of everyone. That includes Eleven, too.

And while he did that, he made Eight, who died of a gunshot in the Upside Down, a heroine of the story. In one spectacular show of his storytelling skills, he called Eleven "The Mage," and The Mage's sister cast one last spell of illusion that allowed El to escape, and no one noticed.

Mike always assured El in Stranger Things that they would leave for some place that has three waterfalls. That is what he imagines, and we see on the screen as El is hiking somewhere, and a majestic land, as Mike always fantasized, appears in front of us.

There wasn't any evidence that she vanished, and even if she did, no one wants to believe it. What Mike told us is what, as everyone agreed upon, "I believe."
