Task has come to an end with an action-packed finale. In one of the most thrilling moments of the episode, Anthony Grasso shot Jayson, marking an end to his terror. Fans are calling it a redemption arc for Grasso, who earlier acted as a mole and helped the Dark Hearts.
Not only that, he was also in a way responsible for Lizzie’s death. However, while the character’s journey seems to have come a full circle, actor Fabien Frankel, who plays Grasso, does not believe that the detective was able to redeem himself.
In an interview with The Wrap, the actor highlighted that owing to the heinous crimes Grasso had committed before, the character can not be forgiven for his sins just because he shot Jayson dead in the Task finale. Frankel said:
“There’s nothing redeeming about that. It doesn’t exonerate him from what he’s done. He’s still responsible for all of that stuff. At least he’s tried to do right by what he’s done, but I don’t see that as a clear conscience at all.”
Fabien Frankel reveals how Grasso did not redeem himself in Task
While Grasso acted as a mole in the FBI for the Dark Hearts, he had a change of heart after Lizzie’s death in Task Episode 6. When he got to know that Maeve’s life was in danger, he rushed to her home to warn her. Meanwhile, he got involved in a shootout and was hit. He bled as he reached Maeve’s home and told her to leave along with the kids.
Jayson then reached the scene, followed by the task force. Grasso later left his car despite his injury and saved Maeve by shooting and killing Jayson. Fortunately, Grasso survived and asked Tom for a penance.
However, Fabien Frankel thinks Grasso’s heroic act can not make one forget his past actions, and that is exactly why Tom also does not forgive him and instead says he never gives anyone penance. Talking about how series creator Brad Ingelsby decided to give an unconventional conclusion to Grasso’s character arc, Frankel said in his interview:
“The hollywoodified version of that ending is that Ruffalo goes, ‘It’s okay, brother, I forgive you. In the eyes of the Lord, you’re forgiven, and in my eyes you’re forgiven. Brad Ingelsby [always chooses] the option that’s the most difficult to choose.”
Elsewhere in the Task finale, Perry and Jayson’s partnership finally ended with Jayson stabbing Perry. After Grasso shot Jayson and saved Maeve’s life, Tom Brandis switched the stolen money for fake bills and let Maeve escape safely.
Tom later spoke in court about his son Ethan, whose mental illness had led to a tragedy. Instead of blaming him, Tom forgave his son, telling him he still loved him and would be waiting for him to come home.
Apart from Fabien Frankel, the crime drama stars Mark Ruffalo as Tom Brandis, Tom Pelphrey as Robbie Prendergrast, Jamie McShane as Perry Dorazo, Sam Keeley as Jayson Wilkes, Thuso Mbedu as Aleah Clinton, Owen Teague as Peaches, Raúl Castillo as Cliff Broward, and Silvia Dionicio as Emily Brandis.
