Apple TV+ is back with its galaxy-spinning tale, Foundation. Season 3 of the show premiered its first episode on July 11, 2025.

Episode 1 kicked off with a 152-year in-universe time jump, which has completely changed the face of the galaxy. The major players have lost their control, which has prompted the return of the mutant lord, Mule.

In Foundation Season 3 Episode 1, as Mule established his reign over the Middle band and Kalgan, Cleon's inspection led to a startling discovery about the impending Third Crisis, which could have catastrophic effects across the galaxy.

Demerzel and Dawn's inspection of the Prime Radiant tells them that one of its branching threads is glitching, which indicates the advent of the Third Crisis (Seldon Crisis).

As the Cleons investigate this anomaly, they discover that the Third Crisis is just months away and will lead to a cataclysmic event and the destruction of the Cleon species. Foundation Season 3 Episode 1 ends with the Cleons discussing that Mule's rule is affecting the future to such a great extent that it has even rendered the predictions of psychohistory useless.

Here is the complete recap of Foundation Season 3 Episode 1.

Foundation Season 3 Episode 1 recap: Mule becomes the ultimate ruler of Kalgan and the galaxy

152 years have passed since the Second Crisis, following which, while the Foundation grew, the Empire lost its control over all major planets, which are now functioning independently.

The Foundation has already conquered the Outer Reach of the galaxy and now eyes the control of the middle band, which comprises all the planets, with Kalgan being the most important one.

However, while the Foundation and the Empire are pitted against each other to seek control of Kalgan, Mule takes the opportunity to kidnap Archduke Bellarion's daughter. He threatens him to give up his control of Kalgan in exchange for his daughter.

In the Foundation Season 3 premiere, while the Archduke underestimates Mule, he uses his Mentalic powers to destroy a major part of the galaxy's air force and ground troops, killing the Archduke in the process. After Bellarion's death, Mule takes his signet ring, which makes him the new leader of Kalgan and the major planets in the middle band.

Foundation Season 3 Episode 1 recap: Captain Pritcher aims to secure an important cargo

Foundation Season 3 Episode 1 also revealed that the Traders, a faction of the Foundation, are looking for a way out of the organization and are planning to leave their masters. This shifted the focus of the episode to Haven, a planet with a raging Civil War, funded by the Empire itself.

The harsh and extreme climate of Haven, ranging from 260 degrees to -180 degrees, called for desperate times, and Captain Pritcher and his girlfriend saw this as an opportunity.

In the Foundation Season 3 premiere, Captain Pritcher discovered that the Imperial ship would drop an important cargo of weapons on Haven. He planned to steal this cargo and take it to the Foundation, thus exposing the true face of the Empire to everybody.

However, when the couple reached the loot drop site, they're chased by Randu Mallow, the leader of the Traders, which forced the couple to flee on their bikes. While they could not get their hands on the cargo, they killed Randu in the process.

Foundation Season 3 Episode 1 recap: Dawn tries to influence the council members

The Empire's loss during the Second Crisis was monumental, even resulting in their loss of the Spacers, who controlled the Imperial jumpships. This slowed them down and led to a weakening grip of the Cleonic Dynasty over the Galactic Council.

While Dawn and his group could no longer affect key decisions about the galaxy, he aimed to manipulate the council members and get his way. He tries to influence the Council and manipulate them into establishing relations with the Merchant Princes.

While many Councilors do not like Dawn's suggestion, he threatens to create major overhauls in the council once he is announced as the new Emperor after 10 days, which forces them to agree to his demands.
