Ghosts Season 5 missed its perfect candidate to be "sucked off" – here's who it should've been

Ghosts Season 5 premiered on October 16, 2025, and introduced a shocking twist in the premiere episode itself. As Jay's soul was about to be taken to Hell by Elias, several ghosts stepped in to take his place instead. However, at the end, it was Carol, Pete's former wife, who made the sacrifice and surprisingly redeemed her soul by doing something to help her Pete.

However, since Carol was among the most important supporting characters, it should have been Patience, played by Mary Holland, to be "sucked off" and went with Elias. While Patience did step in to take Jay's place, she quickly backed out, making her story irrelevant and her character arc incomplete.

Since Season 4 of Ghosts, it was teased that Patience might have a surprising character development in Ghosts Season 5. However, using Carol to be "sucked off" and go to heaven made all of Patience's character arc come to a halt.

Ghosts Season 5: Patience should have been "sucked off" instead of Carol in the premiere episode

In the premiere episode of Ghosts Season 5, Jay was trying to find a way to hide so that Elias would not take his soul to Hell. Therefore, he fixed the ghosts trap to hide, but later changed the plan and decided to trap Elias in there instead. However, their plan was almost a success when he was lured into the trap, but they had to let him go as Carol was also trapped in the ghost trap.

Later, Pete decides to sacrifice himself for his best friend, but it was Carol's only selfless act for her former husband, taking his place instead and going to Hell with Elias. But since this also proved she had a good soul, she was sent to Heaven instead.

Other than Pete and Carol, Patience, the Puritan ghost, was also among the ghosts who wanted to take Jay's place but backed out at the last moment. However, in the finale of Season 4 of the popular sitcom, Patience was the one who was the first to feel the presence of a demon, who was later discovered to be Elias. The ending suggested a compelling twist in the narrative that would have completed Patience's story in the premiere episode after she was "sucked off".

But, with Carol doing the selfless act, Ghosts Season 5 lost a proper moment that would have changed and redeemed Patience's character, who did not have an engaging storyline before Elias's entry.

Ghosts Season 5: Patience can help in exploring the concept of being "sucked off"

Carol's exit instead of Patience was not the only question viewers had when Ghosts Season 5 premiered. It was also the concept of the exit of ghosts introduced in the season. Since Carol was "sucked off" and just with one deed of selfless act, which made the concept confusing because ghosts such as Flower and Pete are among the kind ghosts and still in purgatory.

Therefore, in the upcoming episodes of Season 5, the CBS show can make use of Patience to explain and explore more of the concept. This will help the viewers better understand the concept of how the ghosts can exit from the mortal world into the afterlife, and it will also set up the perfect ending for Patience's character.
