Disney+'s Andor Season 2 concluded with an explosive final arc that will eventually give a natural nudge to Cassian's story in Rogue One. The concluding three episodes were directly connected to the events of the sequel film and also revealed the tragic fates of many characters, including Major Partagaz.
While Partagaz embodied the Empire to its fullest, I cannot help but wonder if he had a strong leadership presence, even reasonable to an extent. A high-ranking ISB officer and commanding officer to Dedra Meero, Partagaz met his tragic fate by suicide.
Seeing a strong and calculative man commit a weak act like suicide was painful and even unsettling, but when Supervisor Lagret arrives to get him for a disciplinary meeting, he realizes that his end is near.
He asks Lagret for a few minutes to compose himself and then takes his own life, likely by a blaster.
Here's why I think Partagez got a befitting death in Andor Season 2.
I think Partagaz's death in Andor Season 2 was highly symbolic of the Empire's collective fall
Andor Season 2 saw resolutions, albeit painful, to many character arcs, and Major Partagaz's is one of them. While he commits suicide off-screen, the muffled shot of the blaster combined with Lagret's orders for his subordinates to hold their positions heavily implies that Partagaz took his own life.
Since he was a high-ranking and calculative ISB Officer, who embodied the Empire's ideologies at large, his suicide came as a surprise, but it eventually became symbolic.
The Andor Season 2 finale finally revealed how Cassian and the Rebel army learned about the most dangerous Imperial weapon, the Death Star. After Lonni Jung gets hold of Dedra Meero's files, the information is passed on to Luthen. After Luthen transfers this information to Kleya and it eventually reaches Cassian and the whole Rebel Army, the damage is done.
At that moment, Partagaz realized that he had not only failed to stop the rebellion but also failed his job and the Empire. While everyone in the organization was tasked with a specific order, Major Partagaz's main task was to stop the brewing rebellion. Once the information about the Death Star was out, he realized that the damage was irreversible and that he would be held accountable for Dedra's action.
Another thing that intrigued me the most about Partagaz's death was that he was listening to Nemik's manifesto in his final moments. The document circulated to combine all rebel forces against tyranny.
While the scene suggested that Partagaz was fearful that he would be held accountable by the Empire and was scared when Lagret came to get him, his decision to take his life was highly symbolic.
I feel he understood his shortcomings and the Empire's delusions that they could still stop the Rebellion brewing against them. Partagaz finally understood that the rebellion had moved from a few incidents of unorganized rebellion to a massive war machine and that he and the Empire could not stop them now.
In Andor Season 2, Partagz's death then becomes symbolic of the fall of an individual and the institution. While Dedra Meero chooses to fight till the end, and even after Krennic accuses her of being a rebel spy, she tries to give justifications for her failures, which ends badly for her too. She is thrown into a prison, a dark future, and a conclusion to her story.
But Partagaz was unlike Dedra. He chose to end his life on his own terms and accepted his failures in the end. While you can barely feel any sympathy for characters like Dedra or Partagaz, the latter still accepted his shortcomings and chose a worthy punishment for himself.
