The Penguin has earned a staggering 24 nominations at the Emmy Awards this year, becoming the second-most nominated series this season. The HBO crime drama started as a spin-off to the 2022 film The Batman, but was able to create its own niche and identity.

The show earned critical acclaim and commercial success when it aired eight episodes between September and November 2024. It follows the titular crime boss who rises through the ranks in Gotham City’s underworld.

Series creator Lauren LeFranc has now reacted to the show’s success, revealing how she feels about The Penguin earning 24 Emmy nods. She said she is grateful for all the love the audience and the industry have showered on the series:

“I recall being in rooms with all our department heads, many of whom have also been nominated; they’re all incredibly kind and talented. I’m just so grateful that people have been recognized in this way. It’s truly an honor because our peers are recognizing us.”

The Penguin has earned seven nominations in the Primetime Emmy Awards categories and the rest in the Creative Arts categories. Lauren LeFranc herself is in contention to win Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie and the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series Awards.

Talking about the recognition, LeFranc said, while the team does not actually work for accolades, she is happy that their efforts are being appreciated:

“Obviously, this is not why we do it, but I felt like when we were making this thing, it was a joy to make something so dark and twisted.”

The showrunner also opened up about the challenges of creating The Penguin, revealing how the writing team was finding it tough to create something fresh out of already established characters. But in the end, they surpassed expectations. LeFranc stated:

“This show is really challenging to make in so many ways, because we were trying to do something different than what people would expect. And whenever you’re seeking that, it’s always extra challenging. There’s a lot of conversations that I had about the vision for the show and the tone of the show, and so many conversations with our actors, and honestly, everybody in the crew.”

Other Emmy categories in which The Penguin has been nominated include Outstanding Lead Actor for Colin Farrell, Outstanding Lead Actress for Cristin Milioti, Outstanding Supporting Actress for Deirdre O'Connell, and Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for both Jennifer Getzinger and Helen Shaver. The winners will be announced at the ceremony on September 14, 2025.

In the creative categories, the show has received nods for Casting, Cinematography, Prosthetic Makeup, Sound Editing, Special Visual Effects, Stunt Performance, Sound Mixing, Production Design, Picture Editing, Title Design, Music Composition, Costumes, Hairstyling, and Contemporary Makeup.

Meanwhile, the show also received three Golden Globe nominations this year, with Colin Farrell taking home the trophy for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a Motion Picture Made for Television.

The Penguin is streaming on HBO Max.
