The Buccaneers Season 2 had numerous intense and tragic moments. One of those moments was the tragic death of Richard (Josh Dylan). Ricard had died by being shot by his own brother, Lord James Seadown, when he and their sister, Honoria, tried to save James's baby and wife from his wrath.

The death was tragic and amplified the drama in the final two episodes of The Buccaneers Season 2. However, actor Josh Dylan was ready and eager to get into the final moments of his character. When asked by Collider about his reaction and how he found out about his character’s fate, he shared:

"I didn't read in the script. I had a conversation with the writers and producers. We spoke about it, and I was quite excited."

More on this in our story.

The Buccaneers Season 2: Josh Dylan tried to keep his death a secret on set

Episode 6 of The Buccaneers Season 2 was one of the most dramatic of the season, with Jinny being determined to get back her baby from her abusive husband, Lord Seadown. Dylan's character Richard and Honoria stood up against their brother and helped Jinny get back her son.

However, in helping Jinny, Richard had to pay the price by losing his life when he was shot by James. In the same Collider interview, Dylan shared that he did not read it in the script and only spoke with the producers and writers and was already excited about it.

His co-actors, Josie Totah and Alisha Boe, who played Mabel and Conchita, respectively, also shared that Dylan was planning to keep it a secret from them. Boe even talked to him about it and shared,

"I came up to him like, “Girl, you're dying.” And then you were like, “Oh, I was going to try to keep it a secret!”

Dylan added that he wanted to make a big revelation on the day of filming the scene but was unable to conceal the information from the other cast members of The Buccaneers Season 2. He said,

"I had ideas of grandeur. I thought it could be a great reveal on the day, but that’s kind of impossible. You’re going to find out. It's an interesting thing when you're working towards something like that because you're obviously not conscious of when you're going to die as a character. He doesn’t know that’s going to happen, so it doesn’t affect the way you play it."

Dylan’s effort to make the scene dramatic and enjoyable was a success, as Alisha Boe, who had already watched the scene, shared that it was heartbreaking and one of the greatest scenes of the series.

Creator’s comments on Richard’s death scene in The Buccaneers Season 2

It was not just heartbreaking for the audience but also for the series creator, Katherine Jakeways, who had to sit with the thought of killing one of the fan-favorite characters in The Buccaneers Season 2 for a long time before making the decision.

In an interview with Deadline, she shared,

"We resisted, we were like ‘We can’t kill Dick, we can’t kill Dick, but the more we resisted it, and the more we realized how heartbroken we were about it, the more we realized that was probably the right choice."

She continued,

"For that reason, really, because you just go, “Oh my god no.” Because he’s so great, and he’s so lovely, and he and Conchita are such a good match. It broke our hearts to think about it. So it was a bit irresistible to do it, but we still feel very sad about it as well."
