I think I’ve figured out who told the Doctor about Belinda in Doctor Who (& it makes the plot underwhelming)

One of the reasons why fans love to dive back into the adventures of Doctor Who is because the show never fails to blend imagination with humor. It centers around a Doctor who is actually an alien from a distant planet called Gallifrey.

The Doctor isn't a human, as he belongs to a powerful species known as Time Lords. They have the superpower to travel anywhere they want in time and space. Another unique ability of the titular character is that the Doctor can regenerate.

He can regenerate into a brand new body and personality when he is nearing his death. This interesting angle has allowed several actors to play the character over the years, and right now Ncuti Gatwa appears as the 15th Doctor in Doctor Who Season 2.

Along the way, the Doctor is joined by a human companion or two, who serve to keep him grounded and usually speak from the audience's perspective. In Season 2, actress Varada Sethu has joined as the newest companion, Belinda Chandra.

And since the very first episode of Doctor Who Season 2, I have been fascinated by the time when the Doctor said to Belinda Chandra, "I was told about you by someone… like you would be important" in the very first episode named The Robot Revolution.

Who was this unknown individual who tipped off the Doctor? What did they know about Belinda to make her so important? I was primed for a twisty reveal — something big, something timey-wimey.

But now, having watched Episode 4 titled Lucky Day, I feel like Season 2 might have actually answered us already… and honestly, I'm a bit disappointed.

Keep reading to explore who I think this person was.

Conrad might be the answer to solving the mystery about Belinda Chandra in Doctor Who Season 2

There's a brief, possibly significant conversation between the Doctor and Conrad Clark in the last few seconds of Doctor Who Season 2 Episode 4 titled Lucky Day. The Doctor has not yet encountered Belinda, but Conrad simply mentions to him, "Have you met Belinda Chandra yet?" And boom.

There it is, the first time that the Doctor has ever heard her name. It sets perfectly for the Doctor's later (or earlier, depending on math involving your timelines) statement of being "told" about her.

So, there you have it then? Enigma resolved? Conrad is the one who provided Belinda's name to the Doctor? Well. Possibly. But I wish he hadn't. Conrad works well within his own episode. He’s twisted, manipulative and unhinged — great traits for a one-episode villain.

However, as the supposed catalyst for Belinda’s importance? That feels weak. He barely knows anything about her. There’s no weight behind the way he says her name, no intrigue, no sense that he knows she matters in a bigger way.

It all feels like a coincidence, not a turning point. If this really is the answer to the mystery in Doctor Who Season 2, it’s an underwhelming one and not because it’s wrong, but because it lacks depth.

Conrad mentioning Belinda in Doctor Who Season 2 might be a stepping stone

Part of me hopes that what we saw in Doctor Who Season 2 Episode Lucky Day was just the beginning. Conrad mentioning Belinda could be a stepping stone, not the destination.

Maybe the Doctor, intrigued by the name, digs deeper. Maybe he meets someone else who gives him more context. Could it be Belinda’s father, who’s been name-dropped but never seen?

Or maybe it’s a future version of the Doctor looping back to nudge his past self? That would certainly explain his vague, timeline-sensitive explanation to Belinda.
