The Last of Us Season 3 hasn't started filming, but it received a massive update this week at the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday. This update was given by none other than Bella Ramsey, who was nominated in the Best Actress in a Drama Series category for their (Ramsey uses they/them pronouns) role as Ellie. The Hollywood Reporter interviewed the actor, and the discussion moved to season 3.

While they did not reveal the filming date, the actor confirmed that they got the scripts for The Last of Us Season 3. Here's what they told The Hollywood Reporter when the interviewer asked them if they saw the scripts for season 3:

"Yes, and I've just seen them. I'm really bad at reading things. Takes me a long time."

Does that mean that the scripts for The Last of Us Season 3 are complete?

We already know that Kaitlyn Dever's Abby will be the central focus of The Last of Us Season 3. Moreover, the cliffhanger ending of the season 2 finale won't be resolved until either the season 3 finale or the possible season 4 premiere.

For the unitinitiated, The Last of Us Season 2 finale concluded with Abby ambushing Ellie, Tommy, Jesse, and Dina's hideout. Abby has injured Tommy and fatally shot Jesse. Ellie tries to talk some sense into Abby, who raises the gun at her. We hear a shot, but don't see the bullet hit anyone, as the screen cuts to black.

Instead, the scene shifts the events of the fourth episode, but this time it is from Abby's perspective, setting the stage for The Last of Us Season 3. This narrative is similar to The Last of Us Part II, where the player is forced to play as Abby. In the game, it is here that we learn why Abby hates Joel. But the HBO series has already revealed Abby's motivation in the season 2 premiere.

Therefore, it seems that the upcoming season 3 will follow Abby over three days as Ellie enters Seattle in The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 4. But the upcoming season will have very little involvement from Ramsey. The actor themselves confirmed that their character will have little involvement in the third season in a June 2025 interview:

“I haven’t seen any scripts, but yes, I do expect that. I think that I’m going to be there, but not a whole bunch. We’ve had conversations about that. I sort of have a rough idea of what it’s going to be, but I can’t tell you.”

What do we know about season 3?

Apart from it revolving around Abby, we also know the major shakeups behind the scenes of this post-apocalyptic drama. We already know that Neil Druckmann, who was one of the co-showrunners of the HBO series and co-creator of the game, isn't involved as the showrunner in the third season. Bella Ramsey addressed whether his exit would affect the upcoming third season in the same The Hollywood Reporter interview:

"I think that he left us in such good stead. He still will always be part of the fabric, it's literally his creation, the whole world. So, he's still there even though he's not. So, I think it'll be fine."

As we wait for The Last of Us Season 3, binge the first two seasons on HBO Max.
