The Last of Us Season 2 has concluded on a rather shocking note. The finale, titled "Convergence", featured several scary and shocking moments despite not featuring any infected throughout its entire runtime.
The episode opens with Dina recuperating from her arrow wound from episode 5, "Feel Her Love". After Tommy manages to get the arrow out of her leg, Ellie and Jesse try to come up with ways to get back to Jackson.
But there's a problem, though, Ellie is still not interested in letting Abby go. Thus, she prioritizes getting revenge on Abby, and this choice has a devastating consequence in the form of Jesse's death in the closing minutes of the episode.
The synopsis for The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 7 reads:
"Amid the battle between Seattle's warring factions, Ellie's search draws her toward a devastating confrontation."
Also, the closing minutes of this episode suggest that The Last of Us Season 3 will mostly be from Abby's perspective.
The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 7 recap:
Here are some of the important moments in the season finale of The Last of Us Season 2:
- Nora's fate revealed
As mentioned above, the episode opens with Jesse taking the arrow out of Dina's feet. As Ellie reaches the abandoned theater, she confesses to Dina about torturing Nora to learn Abby's whereabouts. Ellie reveals the two words Nora gave her, “Whale” and “Wheel”. However, Ellie also reveals that she did not kill Nora. Instead, she allowed Nora to turn, making the latter's fate even more tragic.
Moreover, Ellie also tells Dina the reason why Abby killed Joel in The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 2, "Through the Valley". Hearing this, Dina tells Ellie they need to return to Jackson. For that, Eliie and Jesse have to traverse the dangerous streets of Seattle to a bookstore to meet Tommy.
- Jesse learns of Dina's pregnancy
As Jesse and Ellie walk through the streets of Seattle to meet Tommy inside a bookstore, as they are walking, Jesse confronts Ellie, and the latter accidentally reveals that Dina is pregnant. Then, the two enter an abandoned office building to check how far the bookstore is. While checking the WLF radio on their possession reveals that the WLF is currently having a problem with a sniper, not a Seraphite / Scar.
While Ellie tries to identify the source of sniper shots, whom she and Jesse believe to be Tommy, using binoculars, she realizes what “Whale” and “Wheel” mean. Upon seeing a Ferris Wheel and an aquarium nearby, Ellie realizes that Abby is currently hiding in the Seattle aquarium. Jesse wants to save Tommy rather than help Ellie, while she wants to settle scores with Abby.
- Ellie chooses revenge
Ellie ultimately chooses revenge to Jesse's disappointment, and she takes a motorboat towards the aquarium. However, a turbulent sea wave pushes Ellie and her intact boat to a Seraphite village. Ellie is about to be killed in a gruesome way before the WLF attack the village from another side, causing the Scars to let Ellie go, and she leaves the village on a boat towards the aquarium.
Upon reaching the aquarium, Ellie finds Owen and Mel, two members of Abby's crew, last seen in The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 2. Ellie asks the two about Abby's current location, but Owen pulls a gun on Ellie. Ellie shoots Owen in defence, and Mel is also caught in this crossfire. Ellie is shocked to learn that Mel is pregnant, and the latter requests that Ellie deliver her baby for the child's survival.
But Ellie is unable to deliver and is distraught with how the events played out, and Jesse and Tommy find her next to Mel's body. They take her back to the abandoned theater, and something tragic happens.
- Abby returns
Tommy and Jesse discuss the route to Jackson when Ellie enters the room. Tommy tells Ellie that Owen and Mel were involved in Joel's death and that they made their choices. He also tells her that she has to make peace with the fact that Abby will stay alive and leaves the room. Jesse and Ellie are interacting when they hear Tommy being attacked by an intruder.
They both run fast outwards, when Jesse is tragically shot and the intruder is revealed to be none other than Abby, who, like Mel and Owen, is seen for the first time in the series after The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 2. Ellie requests that Abby let Tommy go and reveals that Joel killed the Fireflies to save her. An incensed Abby points her gun at Ellie and pulls the trigger.
But we don't see the result of that gunshot as the screen goes blank and the scene shifts to three days before, when Ellie and Dina entered Seattle back in The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 4, unbeknownst to the WLF or Abby and her crew. But this scene is not focusing on Ellie and Dina, but rather Abby. This suggests that the third season will be from Abby's perspective, much like the game The Last of Us Part II.
