Starz's beloved historical romance series Outlander is gearing up for an epic conclusion with its eighth and final season on March 6. Based on author Diana Gabaldon's series of eponymous books, the show follows the epic and decades-spanning love story between Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe).Since Gabaldon is yet to finish her narrative with Book 10, the Starz series was initially supposed to end with Season 7. However, Sam Heughan, who has embodied Jamie Fraser for over a decade, reportedly became a passionate advocate for extending the series, pushing for the chance to give the beloved characters and the fans who have followed them across centuries the closure they deserved. The Scottish actor has shared his gratitude for this career-defining role in many interviews and he ultimately lobbied to extend Outlander for another season (Season 8).In an interview with The Herald, Heughan revealed his passion for the project and discussed how he wanted to conclude this story for the fans:“I want to finish the story, not only for myself but for the fans. It wouldn’t feel satisfactory to just end it, left in the air.''More on this in our story.Sam Heughan convinced his show's creators for Outlander Season 8 View this post on Instagram Instagram PostMore than a decade after its release, Starz's longest-running scripted original title will conclude with Outlander Season 8. Over the years, the show has received immense love from the fans, which increased tenfold with the debut of its spin-off series, Blood of My Blood. While the flagship series will conclude with its eighth and final season on Starz, Gabaldon's magical universe will further expand with the spin-off series, which has even been renewed for another season. While fans were disappointed to discover that their favorite show would conclude with Season 8, they were happy that Claire and Jamie's love story would get a definitive ending. Since Gabaldon is still in the process of writing her tenth and final book in the series, the creators initially intended to conclude the Starz series with Season 7.In one of his interviews with The Herald, Sam Heughan revealed:“We were supposed to finish this season.''However, Heughan, who has played the lead character since the Outlander premiere, along with Balfe's Claire, wanted the show to end on a definitive note. The actor revealed how he pushed for another season:''I didn’t want to finish without finishing the story and that is the reason why we are going back to do one more.''He added:“Having said that, Diana is still writing the 10th book and there is plenty more that we haven’t been able to cover. We will have to end it some way. Perhaps not a way that the books end it...hopefully we can get to a place where at least our Outlander is told. It won’t be the full book, but at least it’s our story and it will hopefully give some sort of finality.”Outlander Season 8 will feature a different ending from the books View this post on Instagram Instagram PostThe show hit a major roadblock as Gabaldon had not finished writing the concluding chapter of Jamie and Claire's epic love story. Since the decision to end Outlander with Season 8 was set in stone, Starz's series will feature a different ending than Gabaldon's books. The upcoming final chapter of the show will adapt Books 8, 9 and the unpublished Book 10. Since the show's creators have the mammoth task of fitting the entirety of three books in one season (with ten episodes), the final season will have a different ending. The author confirmed this news with her fans through her official Facebook page:"I think people will be OK with it, but it won't resemble much of Book 10...only because there isn't room.''The final season of Outlander is set to deliver an ending crafted specifically for the television adaptation, offering a conclusion that feels true to the show’s unique vision of Jamie and Claire’s journey.Outlander Season 8 marks the return of Heughan and Balfe and the show's ensemble cast of Richard Rankin, Sophie Skelton, John Bell, Izzy Meikle-Small, Charles Vandervaart, David Berry, Lauren Lyle and César Domboy.Catch Outlander's final season premiere on Starz on March 6.For the latest scoops on your favorite TV shows and movies, follow SoapCentral.
