Ironheart is just a week away now, and one of the highlights of the footage that was released is the magic-powered armor. While some may find this upgrade interesting, hardcore Marvel fans will know that the magical Ironheart armor might be a shout-out to a scrapped idea from the MCU Phase three, Avengers: Infinity War.
For the uninitiated, the Ironheart trailer showed Riri suiting up inside an armor whose HUD (heads-up display) shows magical runes, suggesting that her suit is magically powered. This new suit, which is an upgrade, suggests that Riri, much like Stark, is learning to take her opponents' weapons and transform them into her weapon.
Moreover, this idea might be a clear homage to a scrapped idea from Avengers: Infinity War, which would've seen Doctor Strange in an Iron Man suit and casting spells using it.
Ironheart's homage to Avengers: Infinity War explained
This idea would've been known to Marvel fans for a while thanks to a February 2020 Instagram post by artist Phil Saunders, who worked on the concept art of Avengers: Infinity War. The post was accompanied by the following caption:
"'Iron Strange' - an idea that was cut from the script of Avengers: Infinity War. On the Q-Ship, Tony Stark was going to transfer his armor to Strange to protect him from Ebony Maw’s torture needles. #avengers #avengersinfinitywar #ironman #drstrange #mcu #marvelstudios #marvel #conceptart"
Thus, the scene in Infinity War where Ebony Maw tortures Doctor Strange would've played out differently. If you remember, Tony Stark and Spider-Man had broken into Thanos' Q-Ship discreetly. Once the two manage to locate Doctor Strange, who is Ebony Maw's captive, Tony would've directed his armor towards Stephen Strange as we saw save Pepper in Iron Man 3.
Once Tony loses the suit and is on the verge of falling, Tony is saved by the Cloak of Levitation, which also managed to sneak into the ship. Stephen uses the Iron Man armor to cast magical spells and defeat Ebony Maw, who did not see this coming. If this scene were kept, it would've been the first time in the MCU that magic and science would've been combined, suggesting a powerful combo.
Now, it seems that Ironheart is finally taking this scrapped idea and bringing it to life. The people working on the Disney+ series seem to suggest that magic in the MCU, unlike the Harry Potter Universe, is democratic and accessible to all. While some like Wong and Stephen Strange might be more skilled, there is nothing to stop others from learning and using it.
An armor powered by magic suggests that Riri Williams/Ironheart is one of the MCU's important power players.
"Set after the events of 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever', Marvel Television’s 'Ironheart' pits technology against magic when Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne)—a young, genius inventor determined to make her mark on the world—returns to her hometown of Chicago. Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins aka 'The Hood' (Anthony Ramos)."
Catch Ironheart on Disney+ on June 24, 2025, when the series premieres with the first three episodes releasing together.
