The Gilded Age Season 3 Episode 6 was one of the most emotional episodes for the audience as it marked the potential exit of two iconic characters. Oscar van Rhijn’s story came to an end as he surprisingly died in an accident; meanwhile, Jack’s future in the show was left uncertain after he left the Brook house.

Audiences are now left wondering whether actor Ben Ahlers is leaving The Gilded Age as his character, Jack, has departed the main storyline. It seems like Ben is not going anywhere, as he has hinted that Jack is going to continue to be a part of the show.

Despite his exit from the Brook house, the show will likely keep exploring the footman’s story after he becomes extremely rich due to his invention, an alarm clock, which earned him $600,000.

Ben Ahlers’ future in The Gilded Age

Following the release of The Gilded Age Season 3 Episode 6, Ben Ahlers had an interview with Town & Country, in which he revealed what is next for Jack. During the interview, when he was asked what was going to happen with his character in the rest of the season, Ben said Jack will be exploring his newfound freedom, hinting that he is still very much a part of the show. He stated:

“Jack’s going to be left with some real decisions about how he wants to operate with this newfound freedom, and I would say. Based off of what I think what we all know about him is that he likes to keep himself busy, and he got into this, again, not for the money, but for the engagement of solving a problem.”

Ben added that Jack will find ways to keep himself busy, as he is not someone who can just sit idle and enjoy his riches:

“The name Jack is not irrelevant—it’s like a jackknife. It’s a jack of all trades. You can’t go from working from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day and then just go sit around and be rich in your house. He’s going to definitely want to get himself busy and I think he’s gotten an itch for the patent game, so I’m eager to see what he cooks up next.”

Hence, Ben’s comments showcase that he will continue to appear in The Gilded Age and is not leaving the show. Departing the Brooke house is just a part of his larger story, and there is still a lot left to be explored about his character.

Jack was a recurring character in Season 1 and was made a series regular in Season 2. His importance grew even further in the third season as the humble footman changed his life with his genius invention. After making a reliable alarm clock that did not need oil, Jack patented the design with support from his friends and a business partnership with Larry Russell.

Although early attempts to sell it failed, Larry’s negotiation skills led them to sell the patent for $600,000 in 1884, which equals nearly $20 million today. Jack’s share, $300,000, lifted him from poverty to wealth. When Agnes van Rhijn and Ada Forte found out about his change of fate, they asked him to leave their house.

The Gilded Age Season 3 airs new episodes on HBO on Sundays.
