Created by Martin Gero, the American crime drama Blindspot premiered in 2015 and ran for 5 seasons till 2020. The official synopsis of the show, as per Rotten Tomatoes, mentions,
“When Jane Doe is found naked in Times Square with her memory erased and her body covered in fresh tattoos, Agent Kurt Weller and his FBI team are instantly drawn to the case. Together, they discover each tattoo is a clue, making Jane's body a maze of mysteries that must be solved to uncover her true identity.”
The synopsis further reads,
“But as Jane and Weller get closer to unveiling her past and discovering who set this riddle in motion, they find the quandary goes deeper than they ever imagined, involving people they thought they could trust.”
Given its interesting premise and the protagonist, fans have naturally wondered at times if Blindspot is based on a true story. However, despite being rooted in elements of reality, the series is completely a work of fiction.
Blindspot is not based on a true story
As mentioned previously, Blindspot does not tell a true story. It tells the fictional account of a woman, Jane Doe, who suffers from Retrograde Amnesia, which makes her forget things from the past. While the show does not talk about a real-life case of the condition, the symptoms and results are rooted in reality, which adds an element of non-fiction to the story.
Moreover, another important aspect of the character of Jane Doe and the quest for her identity is the tattoos that she is found to be covered in. Again, despite being fictional, tattoos often serve as memory joggers in real life. For example, the film Memento uses a similar trope with the tattoos as the protagonist with amnesia kept track of what happened through his tattoos.
Moreover, the FBI plays an important part in the show, and while their modes and methods of working have definitely been fictionalized, like it is in any other show, their involvement is another aspect that keeps Blindspot grounded in reality.
The FBI, with their investigation into the past of Jane Doe and their attempts at making the dots connect to solve her mystery, essentially makes it feel like a real investigation where the central person has no idea about their condition or situation.
Therefore, though the series is not based on any particular real events or a true story, the various realistic aspects used in the show give it an authentic and real feeling.
Blindspot can be streamed on Netflix.
