The world of Gen V Season 2 was set up in the closing minutes of The Boys Season 4 finale. Homelander has taken over, and he has on his side two main characters from Season 1 of Gen V, Sam and Cate. It must be noted that in the season 1 finale of Gen V, Cate and Sam caused carnage in Godolkin University, also dubbed "God U."
Vought, however, pins the blame for Sam and Cate's carnage on Marie Moreau, Andre Anderson, Emma Meyer/Little Cricket, and Jordan Li and imprisons them in an unknown facility. Now, the trailer of Gen V Season 2 reveals that Cate frees Marie, Emma, and Jordan. While the trailer sets Andre's absence as a mystery, viewers know that the character won't appear due to actor Chance Perdomo's unfortunate passing.
However, season 2 also revealed that Erin Moriarty's Annie January/Starlight gives Marie a mission. This hints that Annie has filled the leadership position previously held by Billy Butcher. However, it should be noted that nothing is confirmed as of now.
Why do fans believe that Annie is taking up Butcher's position after Gen V Season 2?
The Boys Season 4 ends on a rather depressing note as Homelander has won. Even if he is not named the president, he wields all the political power and immediately starts imprisoning his opponents. That includes all members of Butcher's crew, including MM, Kimiko, Frenchie, and Hughie. However, the two manage to evade Homelander's forces, Annie/Starlight, and Billy Butcher.
However, at this point, The Boys have disbanded as Butcher killed Victoria Neuman in the season 4 finale, and President Robert Singer and the titular characters are blamed for it. Butcher takes the virus that was in Neuman's possession to kill Homelander and other supes, so now he is on his own for now.
Conversely, Annie is trying to form resistance to bring down Homelander's brutal regime. And many believe that Gen V Season 2 is setting up Marie and her friends to join her resistance group for The Boys Season 5.
Annie hands Marie an important task in Gen V Season 2:
The trailer for Gen V Season 2 shows Annie handing a mission over to Marie. The said mission is to know more about Project Odessa, which Godolkin University is supposedly involved in. We also learn that Marie, Jordan, and Emma are admitted back to God U. It is here that Marie may find more about the currently mysterious project.
Introduced in The Boys Season 4, many believe that Project Odessa is a means to replace Homelander. The official synopses read as:
"In Season Two, school is back in session. As the rest of America adjusts to Homelander's iron fist, back at Godolkin University, the mysterious new Dean preaches a curriculum that promises to make students more powerful than ever. Cate and Sam are celebrated heroes, while Marie, Jordan, and Emma reluctantly return to college, burdened by months of trauma and loss."
It continues:
"But parties and classes are hard to care about with war brewing between Humans and Supes, both on and off campus. The gang learns of a secret program that goes back to the founding of Godolkin University that may have larger implications than they realize. And, somehow, Marie is a part of it."
Do you think that Annie January is the new leader of The Boys?
