After its eight-episode run, The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2 wrapped up with its final episode on June 22, 2025.
The dramatic finale closed a few major storylines with two brutal deaths; however, there were certain loose ends that were dangling even when the screen turned black.
As per reports, The Walking Dead: Dead City has not been renewed for Season 3 yet. However, there is a high chance that The Walking Dead: Dead City will be renewed for a season 3, as Lauren Cohen, who plays Maggie, has teased her character development for the upcoming season.
For instance, the viewers are eager to know who finally takes control of Manhattan. With the New Babylon forces marching into the city, it seems like they are all set to capture the methane plants and take total control of the city and the remaining survivors.
Meanwhile, the Dama's fall was brutal, and with the Croat betraying her, she was left to die alone. By the end of the season, she managed to survive and brainwash Maggie's son, Hershel, completely. So what's the next plan for the powerless yet deadly duo? Another question that remains unanswered in the season 2 finale is what happened to the Croat?
In the penultimate episode, we saw that after a chilling adventure all across Manhattan to trace Hershel. However, the Croat decided to part ways with Maggie before she met Hershel. Did the Croat return to Croatia? What's next for Maggie, Negan, and Perlie? Are the New Babylon forces the new enemies for the trio?
If you are done watching The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2 and wondering whether it will be renewed for season 3 or not, here's what we know about it.
Will there be The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3?
In an interview with Collider, Cohen said,
"In terms of how long we spend on our story in Dead City, even things we talk about that could happen in another season, it’s such a new take and a new direction that as long as those things get to keep happening then the story is not done."
"There’s a big light coming for Maggie, that we have in this long-term arc that’s planned for her. So, I definitely want to stay until the light comes.”
In an interview with People Magazine, Lauren Cohen said that she's excited and interested to see her character in a different avatar than what she had been in the previous seasons. She said that she's eager to:
"Revisit the person we first met. That stuff really moves me".
Even though not directly, Cohen teased the possibility of The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3.
The series has managed to garner positive ratings and create a social media buzz. It has garnered over 7.1 stars out of 10 on IMDb and 71% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it is highly unlikely that the franchise/AMC will drop the popular series. If rumors are to be believed, The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3 is in its pre-production stage and might be released by 2027.
With its fan favourite duo, Maggie and Negan, reuniting at the end of season 2, burying their past grievances, it feels like the stage for season 3 is set. After Ginny and Bruegel's shocking death in the finale, Manhattan's takeover by New Babylon forces and Hershel and the Dama's unusual alliance, the situation seems to heat up, setting up the framework for the upcoming season.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, when the executive producer Scott M. Gimple was asked about whether the ending of season 2 (especially with the New Babylon forces taking over the streets) sets the stage for season 3, Gimple replied,
"I don't like saying one way or another, but I will say we've surprised you in the past as far as, it seems like they're going to be a Terminus foreever, or it seems like this or it seems like that. You never know."
The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2 Episode 8 - A brief recap
In the finale episode, we saw how Maggie was kept in custody by the Dama and was released only when she promised to kill Negan. When Maggie reached the location, which had already turned into a war zone with Bruegel and Negan's forces clashing, she had one thing in mind: to kill Negan and prove it to Hershel that she hadn't forgotten the consequences of what Negan did in the past.
However, when Maggie was finally able to stab Negan, she failed to kill him. Maggie chose to spare his life when she saw that Negan took care of Ginny. Unfortunately, it was too late as Ginny succumbed to her injuries and turned to a walker. Negan chose to end her suffering and stabbed her with Maggie's knife.
Negan, who had killed Bruegel in the most gruesome way a few minutes ago, broke down completely. He finally understood that no matter what, violence always leads to such tragic ends. When Hershel came to know that his mother had failed in the mission, he grew furious.
We finally see Hershel drifting completely towards the Dama, whereas Maggie chooses to ally with Negan and Perlie. In the upcoming season, we might see Negan struggling with his grief, especially after failing to save Ginny.
Additionally, the New Babylon forces and the Dama might once again fight to claim Manhattan. Currently, it seems like the New Babylon might be successful in capturing the methane plants.
