Emilia Harcourt’s backstory with Rick Flag Jr. was brought into the spotlight in Peacemaker Season 2. And now Jennifer Holland (actress playing Harcourt) has decided to spill the tea on how this revelation changed the way she looks at her own character.
In a recent interview, Holland got candid about Harcourt’s pain, her die-hard loyalty, and some epic grudges. It’s not just about Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman) and Peacemaker/ Chris Smith (John Cena) getting dragged into her emotional tornado. As the season moves on, you start seeing Harcourt in a totally different way. She is dealing with loss, guilt, and trying to find any kind of real closeness in James Gunn’s off-the-rails universe.
The romance between Harcourt and Flag Jr., revealed through flashbacks and alternate-universe twists, has shaken up the whole cast. Everyone is acting differently, like the whole squad’s vibe just shifted. It also makes you look at Harcourt’s frosty attitude toward Peacemaker in a whole new light. Turns out it’s not just that she is tough, she has a ton of old baggage and regret bubbling under the surface.
Peacemaker Season 2: Jennifer Holland reacts to Harcourt and Flag Jr.’s revelation
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant Plus, Holland explained:
“Well, interestingly enough, James and I knew this about Harcourt when we shot Season 1. We already knew the relationship that she had with Rick Flag Jr.. So it didn’t change my perception of character at all because he actually was able to expound on the thing that we already knew that we didn’t discuss openly in Season 1.”
Holland further stated:
“In [Peacemaker] Season 1, all you see is that she has this incredible disdain for this man whom she’s been saddled on a team, and we don’t really know what that is. I don’t know that the audience really asks a question about it so much, but she hates this guy."
"And she basically says to him, you know, ‘I’m gonna call you Peacemaker, you can call me Harcourt. How’s that? I’m not interested in going any further with you. I’m on a team with you that doesn’t mean I have to like you and let’s just leave it at that’.”
According to Holland, Harcourt has a legitimate reason to despise Peacemaker. Her attitude isn’t just some random saltiness; it’s personal. There’s real pain underneath all that glaring and snark. So instead of her coming off as someone with one-dimensional bitterness, she has layers.
The Peacemaker Season 2 episode revealing Harcourt and Flag Jr.’s romance flipped the script. There’s a flashback showing an intimate moment right before Flag leaves for Corto Maltese. And you know how that went. Peacemaker ends up killing him.
This incident, Holland claimed, lies at the center of Harcourt’s unwillingness to get too close to Chris. And now, as Flag Sr. wants revenge and parallel universe versions of the characters run around Peacemaker Season 2, emotional stakes have never been greater for Harcourt.
Peacemaker Season 2: The show’s shifting character dynamics

Peacemaker Season 2 ventures boldly into the consequences of the past, particularly the changing relationships of Harcourt. At the beginning of the season, the reason Chris Smith was unable to continue with Harcourt is framed by a series of layered flashbacks and encounters in alternate worlds.
The revelations are used in the show to understand why, even in times of friendship, Harcourt turns Chris away.
One of the most crucial scenes in the Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 3 depicts Harcourt in an alternate reality, blissfully engaged in a relationship with a very much alive Flag Jr. This twist not only tortures Chris, who has no choice but to go through the trauma of murdering a friend and a rival, but also justifies Harcourt’s loyalty.
In the main timeline, Harcourt is stuck in an emotional tug-of-war. She can’t really shake off what she had with Rick Flag Jr., and that puts a massive roadblock in the way of any romance between her and Chris.
Meanwhile, Rick Flag Sr. wants revenge for his son’s death. So, if Harcourt even thinks about getting involved with Chris, she will not just be dealing with her own guilt; she will be in a direct conflict with Flag Sr.
The showrunners, as well as Holland herself, have clarified that such plot developments have long been in the offing. During pre-season interviews, according to In Creative Company, Holland teased:
“There are certain things you discover in Season 2 about Harcourt’s past that we’ve known since the beginning. It’s really what drives her.”
The result is a series that reinvents Harcourt, not as a cold, distant sidekick, but as a middle-ground, traumatized fighter whose every new encounter is predetermined by the hauntings of the past.
